Got my 16GB Black iPhone from the Sydney Apple Store today, went smoothly apart from the Optus servers going down for ages.
When I got to the second floor I went through the activation etc. decided to go on 24 month $59 Cap (after playing with demo units and watching usage, I realised 500MB was plenty for me, so no need to jump ship to 3).
When the girl went to select handset payments the dropdown said 24 or 1. I stopped her and asked if that meant I could pay the handset upfront and she said yes, so I changed to a 12 month plan, paying $504 upfront for the handset. Anyone else notice that this was Windows they were doing it on? The Windows Update 5mins till restart thing kept interrupting us.
So the $504 will be on my first bill, then she asked If I wanted MobileMe, so I said yes (turns out they're giving a discount like in the US, $40 off), and also got a Dock.
The wait in line was excruciating (my feet are still sore), but going from the front of the line to leaving the store with my phone only took about 20 minutes.
So far I'm pretty happy, having owned an iPod touch I'm not as wowed as some people might be, but it's a great device. I'm just glad I got one, going to the Apple Store was the right choice it seems.
It was also hilarious that while we were lining up they kept having to go up the line and call out for Telstra/Vodafone customers, because almost the whole line was Optus and the Vodafone reps didn't have any customers.
So count me as being overall very happy with my experience today.

My local Optus World has some in stock.
edit: can you buy insurance from Optus, and if so, how much?

They do offer insurance, but since I turned it down I never saw the price.
