Perhaps because thousands of people like you are clogging the lines with trivial queries like this? I mean, I'm sure people calling with real support or sales queries would find it even more frustrating.
You'll get the phone when you get it. Nothing they tell you, whether based on useful information or not, is going to make any real difference - so you can save yourself unecessary stress, frustration and time by hanging up the phone and not worrying about it.

Optus will not sell you pre-paid anything over the phone.
I have gone into Optus to ask about a rain check, but they refuse to do anything of the sort for someone who doesn't want to sign a contract.
Looks like the only way to get an iPhone outright is to buy through Telstra. Costs $70 more than Optus when you include the unlock fee (for 16gb model). I am thinking about it...And trying to convince myself not to buy now. It's really hard. I am hoping that vodafone will offer outright phones soon *sigh*

Dick Smith do unlocked vodafone phones. I could have had one last Sunday but hesitated as I wasn't sure if you could take them to Three.
He who hesitates is lost..
Unlockable 16GB'ers are as rare as hens teeth now.
Sure I could get one if I signed with the infamous Three but I don't want to go with any of them.

I am starting to notice that. My brain is telling me to wait for a better deal (and a software update...Seeing as people have been complaining about lag). The waiting is driving me crazy though. If I stick to my current tactics, I might not get one 'til next year!

Well thanks for your useless opinion. Some of the heresay on these forums has raised speculation of differentiating dates of delivery.
Some of us are travelling overseas, and are trying to ascertain a more definate date as to ensure it can actually be recieved before departing. So whilst you can sit back and state i'll get it when I get it, i want to make sure its not while nobody is around to receive it!
In my mind this is a perfectly genuine query, given that I have not been provided with a definate date. The reason for my rant is that this is a daily occurence, surely my 2 minute question is just as valid as a 40minute sales transaction given that they have my sale already.

You aren't going to get a date. Optus have no more idea than you do.
The stock issues are not just local. Stock is running low in America and Europe too.
It's going to be leftovers for a while, I think.

Sorry you feel that way. I pity the poor Optus sod who has to indulge your need to rant.
I apologize for being gruff- tone is so difficult to convey when you're typing on an iPhone keyboard.

TLife Melb has them
I live in Northern NSW...had no luck getting a pre-paid in bris/gold coast...all saying 3 months!!!
Rang my cousin in Melb, he walked into TLife (bourke st) and walked out with a black 16gig pre-payed (activated and network locked) 15 mins later!! They only sold to him because he is an existing Telstra Mobile Customer. They told him they will not sell to ppl not already with telstra.
Not sure how many they had, but he seemed to have no probs. Goos Luck

I have to agree with Ozi. I don't have an iPhone yet, but there is no point getting so worked up about it. You won't die if you don't get it when you want it * sigh *

Loving life.
