iPhone carrier-specific features?

Hey.. haven't heard anything about this lately... but are there any carrier-specific / carrier-dependent features on the iPhone.
Not sure if that makes sense, but I remember back to the first keynote unveiling of the iPhone v1 that there were cool features like having a visual voicemail inbox where you click on individual voice messages etc instead of just calling a number and having to listen to them all in order and listen to annoying menu instructions etc.

I also remember there were also some other features that were specific to iPhone that needed to be implemented at the telco's end.

The main reasons I ask are:
  1. Will Optus etc support these features? and;
  2. If I got a phone from Optus on prepaid, paid the unlock fee, then went to "3", would I have these features?

Visual Voicemail? It's rumoured to be only available on telstra at launch. At this stage, Optus are a no... though it'll probably be implemented later....as will 3 if they ever get the iPhone.

The guy who posted the Telstra 'plans' in the Telstra thread says Telstra will have Visual Voicemail, Optus makes no mention of it and Vodafone has said none of its markets will have it right away, but it will come.

There aren't any other features that need telco co-operation, Steve said there would be, but so far nothing new.

And there's nothing stopping you from re-programming the 'Voicemail' button on the iPhone so that you call your own voicemail number.

It's not visual, but it is one touch away from your voicemail inbox.

Although word is that Telstra are putting their own Sensis-related stuff onto their branded iPhones, although you'd think they'd all come in the same boxes, unless they've got them made specifically, or it reacts specifically to the brand of SIM inside it.

I'm in the same mindset, possibly buying outright from Optus then putting my Telstra SIM in, which is on a nice $49 cap (out of contract).

Maybe when they activate the phone, the Telstra apps are loaded on also.

It could be as simple as a web link on the home screen.. no need to tell all your staff that something is now linking to your site.
