3G iPhone Reviews
Here is David Pogue's review, Walt Mossberg's review and Edward Baig's review of the 3G iPhone. What are your thoughts?

David Pogue has too much focus on the US side of things. (Mystery gone certainly don't apply that much to us. Especially the ones that haven't got a jailbroken 1G phone. And we have plenty of 3G coverage).

This worries me:
Quote:
Unfortunately, theres not much you can do with the G.P.S. According to Apple, the iPhones G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example.
Instead, all it can do at this point is track your position as you drive along, representing you as a blue dot sliding along the roads of the map. Even then, the metal of a car or the buildings of Manhattan are often enough to block the iPhones view of the sky, leaving it just as confused as you are.
|
I'm getting it mounted in my car specifically so I can use turn by turn navigation. There are no Manhattan style block in here despite Gold Coast's best efforts to put up highrises, and if you use a window mount it should have a clear view upwards. But "G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle". Really? What is TomTom doing then?

Good reviews - battery life comments were very interesting, and disappointing.
I've had a few people ask me why battery life is such an issue for me - and I'd say Walt's comments sum it up. If it can't last through the day, then it's going to be next to useless for a lot of people who use them as a business tool.

In contrast E C Baig has this to say:
Quote:
I was pretty impressed by the accuracy on the new device as I drove along in my car, searched for nearby pizza places, and requested directions.
Alas, the feature begs for the audible turn-by-turn directions found on Samsung's Instinct and others. (Again, I'm hoping a third-party developer will fill the void.)
|
So I am guessing the jury is still out.

I'll be getting a dock for work and leave it in there for the working day. Combined with a normal charger at home and a car charger that should take care of most days for me.
Batteries benefit from being constantly charged (as long as they have modern power management cutting the charge when the battery is full), so this setup should work out well for me.
People constantly out in the field (without a car charger) would suffer the most.
This is however a common problem these days with power hungry devices outevolving batterytech (which has stagnated).

I'm sure they do, but tough titties really.. if business = phone calls and data access on the move, then it should be up to it if it's out there spruiking itself as an enterprise solution..
If it can't handle the average business user, then they will receive backlash when people start finding they need to have the thing docked for part of the day so that it can make it though. if that ends up being the case for mid-level business users, then it is bullshit and they shouldn't have released something that is substandard.
We'll see soon enough, though given that these are 'reviews' and not speculation, I have concerns for Apple.

The 3G iPhone has 300 hours of standby time, 50 hours better than the original.
If you plan on talking on it for more than 5 hours, you can always switch to Edge for 10 hours of talk time, 2 hours better than the original.

Ha Ha! People bitched about having to wait for a 3G version and Steve said it was because he wasn't happy about battery life. We were all waiting on some new 3G chip that used less power.
Now its here and peeps are bitching about battery life.
Wait until you use it people! :-)

being offered through three carriers means that there are a dizzying array of plans and deals available with the competition keeping everyone honest.

and they leaves me with one question... WHAT?! there's nothing honest about vodafones lead up to the iphone launch and telstra might only just give us another peek at their plans today...
also... he mentions this:

For an average price of around $10, iPhone 3G owners will be able to tap into a potentially bottomless pit of content that can transform their phone into a game console or a musical instrument or a medical encyclopedia.
|
where does this $10 figure come from? what does this mean? some kind of subscription service?
