This "not releasing the plans until the last minute" by Voda and Telstra is giving me the sh**s. I'm quite tempted to get a prepaid one from Optus as soon as I can (I didn't pay a deposit... oops) and then choose a plan to go on at a later stage.

constantly updated comparisons spreadsheet
Those who would like to view a spreadsheet comparing all iPhone offerings from the Telcos may wish to do so
here.
It is open for anyone to view and edit whenever news comes in. (thanks Paulm for collating the data!)

CustomerConnect - Optus CustomerConnect
However, can some explain to me (like I'm a two-year-old) the difference between the 'yes' Cap plans and the 'yes' Plans. The Cap plan is listed as having 500mb data with $350 for calls and text etc. The regular 'yes' plan is listed as having 700mb data, but only $54 for calls and text.
Why such a massive difference in call and text allowances?
TIA

From what i can tell is that The 'Yes" Cap Plans cap at the set amout such as $59 while the 'Yes' Plans offer $54 of calls & text in $59 where you have to Pay as You go depending on how much you spend.
Personally I think the $39 'Yes' Plan is the best for me since I dont really call alot & I can get 18c per 30sec. call rate with 18c text messages & 500mb of Downloads.
I think i'll be happy with that

Don't you mean 33c? The 30 second block is at least 19c, and that's on the top Yes plan.

Not sure if this has been covered (sorry no time to check @ work) but just got off the phone to Optus Corporate guy who nearly floored me when he suggested that if I buy the iphone outright and unlock it then try to hook it up to a plan of my choice .......ie existing awesome optus corporate plan.............then I am in for a rude shock. He suggests that it cannot be done - and that the only plans Optus will hook you up to are the new iPhone plans they are advertising.
Has anyone heard similar to this? Seem more than bizzare to me and I really hope this guy was wrong.
He could not exlain further and agreed that apple had them over a barrel. Also said waiting game might be best - new plans in September possibly.
Prick ache growing by the hour with this shit.

The best data value is buying the iPhone outright from Optus and paying the $80 for the unlocking then going on a Virgin data plan. You also have to have your calls with virgin but you get 1gb of data per month for $15. Unbeatable at this time.

I'd suggest calling Optus Customer Service. I'm in a similar boat, cept my contract is up in 10 months.
I was told 2 days ago that if I wanted to upgrade to an iPhone and get a new contract, it would cost me either $315 for an "Earily Upgrade" or $315 to end my current contract earily.
So call them and ask which of those 2 options is the best for you.

I understood that they are saying this, because generally the Data Pack's that you can get from Optus are charged to you on top of your mobile phone plan, whereas the New plans for the iPhone actually include the Data as part of the plan.
I could be wrong about that though.
I hope that answers your question...

I'm hoping to get an iPhone pre-paid on Optus but I'm not sure which cap I should go with. $40 doesn't sound too bad, but would 50mb of data be enough, just to check email on the go or talk with my friends on IM when I'm out at work or on the bus etc?

Personally, anything under 100mb is asking for trouble.

PDF of all plans so far:
RapidShare: Easy Filehosting
Things to note: - Vodafone Call Rates are their current rates, could be different to final iPhone rates.
- On Vodafone you can (apparently) choose to pay monthly, or upfront. This is still unclear on Optus, so at the moment only the "with 8GB/16GB" columns are relevant to Optus. So, for Vodafone the 8GB Cost and 16GB Cost columns are what you can pay up front, if you do look at the plan column for the monthly rate, not the 'Monthly w/8GB' or 'Monthly w/8GB' columns.
