good photo size for iPhone?

So i have been updating my address book and stuff in anticipation for the iPhone..

i was making a new album in iPhoto to put on it when i realized, having pics over 3000 pixels wide is going to do nothing but take up too much space for no good reason on my iPhone..

Anyone know a good number of pixels to make photos so that they still look sharp, but aren't ridiculously oversized?

iTunes automatically makes a smaller version specifically to upload to your iPhone. That's what happens on the iPod touch.

iTunes coverts / downsizes them for you...
you just select which albums / folders you want and iTunes does the rest.

When I optimised my photos with iTunes when it was syncing, it actually took up more space on my iPod's hard drive. Could this be a problem on my computer?

There's an option to copy the original over as well. You might have to check that it's disabled.
