iPhone 3G - MobileMe, Push, and Pull Email

Hi All,

First post (of what I hope will be many!) here on MacTalk Nice to meet you all. I actually had a quick question regarding how email is going to work on the iPhone 3G with the 2.0 software.

Coming from a BlackBerry background, I'm used to getting push email for all of my email accounts (business, personal, etc.) I've got at least 6 email accounts that I would like access to from my iPhone 3G when I get it (gmail, yahoo, msn, and 3 work accounts).

My question to all of you is, how would I go about getting push email to all these accounts? My work accounts are not on an Exchange server, so I can't tie it up that way.

I've heard that MobileMe is going to offer push email. If so, would the best approach be to get this and then setup all my email accounts to redirect to the MobileMe account? And if I do go with this approach, am I going to lose synchronization? ie. If I delete an email that was redirected from my gmail account on my iPhone, will this synchronize to my original gmail account or has the forwarding screwed that possibility?

In short, what is everybody else out there doing in order to get email push and synchronization ala BlackBerry when none of the accounts are on an Exchange server?

Thanks!

As you mentioned, the best thing to do is set up a Mobile Me account and have all your e-mails forwarded into that account. When doing that, the Mobile Me account will not sync with G-Mail after you have already forwarded the message. The best thing to do is to not use your G-Mail account at all, just let the messages keep on flowing into Mobile Me.

Hi matthew,

Thanks for the reply. While I can maybe avoid using gmail, I can't avoid using my work accounts People need to email me on these, and I can't simply tell them to start using my MobileMe account for business emails (smacks of unprofessionalism for my small business).

I'm guessing also then that if somebody sends me an email to my work account, (let's call it myname@mycompanyname.com), that if I try to reply to that email from my iPhone the recipient will see the reply come from my MobileMe account?

If so, it sounds like the iPhone email still doesn't compare to the BlackBerry's, at least for small business owners like myself.

Gmail has a really cool feature where you can forward emails to a single Gmail account and then be able to reply to emails with an email address of your choosing. So for example, I have 3 emails:

aagius@gmail.com - my personal email
anthony.agius@mactalk.com.au - my "work" email
anthony.agius@rmit.edu.au - my previous work email I still get stuff sent to

I have entered these emails into Gmail and it allows me to select which one I want to send email from. *all* that email arrives into my aagius@gmail.com inbox, but when I reply to a message that was sent to anthony.agius@mactalk.com.au - it will actually put anthony.agius@mactalk.com.au in the "From" field of the reply, so people never know about aagius@gmail.com

I'm hoping MobileMe does this - that would be handy for a lot of people
