iPhone to iPhone 3G swap? Confused..

How to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G

Ok so it states this:

Quote:
How to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G

To replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G, follow these steps:

1. Purchase iPhone 3G from an Apple Store or from a carrier. For more info, choose your country then click on where to buy.

In the US, iPhone 3G includes a SIM and your original iPhone's SIM is not needed. Your original iPhone account information will be transferred to iPhone 3G's included SIM when you purchase iPhone 3G. To dispose of your original iPhone SIM, contact your carrier.

In other countries where the original iPhone was sold1, you can use your original iPhone's SIM with iPhone 3G. Contact your carrier for additional information.
The rest of the article relates how to back up your original iphone and what not for your 3g...

But, does this mean we can swap our iPhones that we imported for the new 3G ones?

It also states further down the page

Quote:
Requires an original iPhone used with O2 UK, O2 IRL, T-Mobile Germany, T-Mobile Austria, or Orange France. Original iPhone was not sold in other countries, except for the US.
So if we virginze and send back to its original state, and send it in with the AT&T sim card (and possibly say we only used it as a iTouch) we could get away with it and swap?

You would probably have to sign up for a new AT&T contract.

Thats what im thinking....but what happens for those "USA" users who didnt go on a AT&T plan but used it as an iPod...Apple stores were also selling them.

But I cant remember if you could access the iPod features without activating your plan or bypassing activation..

Im sure I can say i never used it

I'm not sure where you get the idea that "they" are replacing your iPhone. It's more that "you" are replacing your iPhone. You buy a new one and keep the old one, which is why AT&T are also providing information on what you can do with your old iPhone.

You can't swap it here, full stop.

To do a swap/upgrade you need to get it on AT&T from the US.
