I was thinking about selling my v1, cancelling my exisitng contract with Optus and resigning but i can't be ars*d.

I'll wait a few months till all the bugs and crap are sort of fixed in the 3G before i'll move over i think.

Considering no one knows how many units each carrier has ordered and how they will distribute their units (company stores, resellers, agents etc..) It's a little hard to judge.

However, providing each of them has ordered a decent number of units, I don't really see there being an immediate shortage of iPhones.

According to an ACMA release published in April this year shows that 90% of household consumers have a mobile phone. That's roughly 19.2 million people.

I don't know what the numbers are as to how many are pre or post paid or how many have multiple phones but I can bet a fair chunk would a) not be able/willing to pay out any contract; b) not be able/willing to switch from a non-iPhone carrier or c) not be interested enough in the iPhone to make a switch purely for that reason.

I'm not saying there won't be shortages but I don't think it will be a case of selling out on day 1. Unless the carriers have been really stupid and ordered a minuscule number of units..

There weren't any shortages last year when the iPhone was launched.

That's true retroneo, but the original iPhone was only released in the US, followed by staggered releases in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Austria.

iPhone 3G is being released in 22 (including the original 6) on July 11, followed others later in the year. Apple will need to have made sure they've produced enough units for launch or there could very well be a short term global shortage on iPhones.

Aren't you forgetting about network locking?

Honestly, as excited as I am about getting an iPhone (and as long as I have been hanging out to get one, I once even contemplated importing one AND will be lining up with fellow iPhone faithful to get one next Friday morning), Jeez guys It's just a phone! You're not going to starve to death or anything if you miss out on one the day that it's released!

Stupidest poll ever! If anything it should be "iPhone shortages, should Apple worry?"
Yeah probably. But should we? I'm sure we've all got far more pressing issues to worry about than whether we get an iPhone on launch day.

Agh, please don't say that. (If I was to go with Optus over Voda) I was planning to get one from a Telechoice kiosk, it's in the outer suburbs though so I'm hoping there won't be a great demand for iPhones out here in the sticks. :P

Out of the box, in goes the carrier's sim card, then activated on that 'activation only' iTunes account, which inserts the lock onto the phone. Then handed to you.

My guess anyway.
