Who would sign up and immediatly cancel? Unlocking fee is 80 dollars for first 6 months, and prepaid pricing is rather good.

You would just go for the pre-paid iPhone then wouldn't you?

using the $79 plans
YES CAP plans have:
$500 free calls / sms
35c flagfall (every call)
25c SMS
35c per 30secs calls
20mins free to other OPTUS phones (8pm til midnight)
5mins free to other phones on the same mobile account
YES plans have:
$74 free calls
25c flagfall (every call)
25c SMS
21c per 30secs calls
plus one of the following:
100 free texts
5mins free to other 5 other OPTUS phones
20mins free to other OPTUS mobiles phones
plus rollback pricing and other stuff.
So basically you can bundle it all together in a CAP and your spending MORE per call / SMS but you get it under the $550 ALLOWANCE worth of calls / SMS
or on the YES you get less ALLOWANCE ($49) but the actually call / SMS rate is cheaper per call / SMS. plus the freetime / rollback stuff...
Best thing to do is get an old bill, work out how many calls you make, who those calls are too (optus or not), how many SMS's etc and work out if it's between $79 and $550. There will be a cross over point where it's better to go one way or the other... But goodness knows where that is!

yo! i just got the email. you can register your preference (black, white, 16gb, 8gb.
So maybe I'm an idiot, but does that mean you pay the monthly rate of say, $59 as well as the handset repayment, taking the total potentially up to $101 per month (16gb on a 12 month contract)?
Or is the handset repayment included in the monthly rate?

So true.
I will wait for Vodafone who should have similar deals. I'm going to get it outright and stay locked to their network (since I'm a happy Vodafone customer).

Yes, but you wouldn't do that now would you Especially seeing as though there are pre-paid plans that only charge you $80 to unlock (or free if you buy $80 worth of credit)
Edit: Too late - on more than one count, haha

Ok just got off the phone with Optus. The guy who I was transferred seemed to know all about the new plans. He said if you chose say the $49 cap and realise there isn't enough data for you, you can upgrade to the higher plans at no cost. However you handset repayments will stay the same.
And there are extra data packs you can add on, $15 for 200mb. However thats more expensive than just going up $10/month ad getting 250mb extra. He said the data pack won't change, but that doesn't sound right to me.
