Whether or not the amount Australia is getting is enough is irrelevant. Apple has to have enough to distribute across 22 countries. Australia is going to get as many as possible, but that might not be enough to keep everyone happy on the day. There isn't an unlimited supply of iPhones after all.

Optus Store Registration

I went into my local Optus store today and asked what time they were going to be opening on Friday. She said that they were going to be open from 7am to 7pm. She then went on to tell me that unless I had put down a deposit I was unlikely to get my hands on an iPhone. I told her that I had already paid a deposit. Rather than patting me on the back and saying that everything was going to be ok, she followed up with another question "what store have you assigned as your preferred Optus outlet to pick up your iPhone".

Have any of you guys been asked this? I haven't been given the option to my knowledge!

If anyone has nominated a store, how do I go about doing this. She told me to ring Customer Service, but they won't be in until the weekend.

iPhone Distribution

This is just a quick chart, with the populations of all 22 iPhone Countries (data from Wikipedia). I don't know how to get Numbers to calculate what percentage of the total population each country is. Here's the chart:

Working out the percentages manually:
Australia: 2.27%
New Zealand: 0.45%
UK: 6.44%
USA: 32.35%
Assuming there are 3 million iPhones, Australia should get 68,100, NZ 13,500, UK 193,200, USA 970,500 iPhones.

Looks like a guess of 20k for Optus sounds good. I'd say if Australia got 20 thousand per carrier and USA got about 1 million, that sounds about right. Let me know if I cut a digit off of one of the populations or something.

A country that legally requires providers to sell handsets outside of plans and contracts is France.

The negative value in the delta column is how much cheaper in AUD the Optus unlocked iPhone is than the France Telecom (Orange) price.

However, France's VAT rate of about 19% is almost twice that of Australia's GST. Strip the value tax out of both devices (in Australia, by way of the Tourist Refund Scheme*) and you get roughly $743/$692 (8GB) and $852/$828 (16GB) for Australia vs France prices, respectively.

So for a traveller, the sort of person who most needs an unlocked phone, the French prices are $51 and $24 cheaper for the 8GB and 16GB iPhones, respectively.

* The TRS applies only to the price of the handset; services (such as the $80 unlocking fee or recharges) are not eligible for refunds.

You have got to be kidding, I just spent the last 20min doing the same thing.

Mine is the same, except I included France as they are launching on the 17th of July. And I also crudely included GDP for distribution (richer people = more iPhones).

Assuming 3million iPhones produced this is the distribution.

The GDP/population distribution is done by (pop/total pop)*(GDP/average GDP)* no. of iPhones.

All of the data is from the CIA world factbook.

Edit and for 10mill iPhones at launch.

Welcome Luke.

Your post may help us greatly work out what stores plan on stocking the iPhones.
Go to: Optus iPhone - Store Search and type in a postcode near you and it brings up stores located in that area, I assume the ones that are going to be carrying the iPhone stock.
