Let's think about that number for a second. If $1 million buys 50,000 handsets then that's a wholesale price of $20 per iPhone. I don't think so.
Even at a more reasonable estimate of $500 wholesale, that $1 million figure would mean only 2,000 iPhones ordered. Again, I don't think so.
The actual dollar figure Optus has spent on iPhones has a couple more zeroes attached.

Has anyone considered why Optus stopped taking deposits for the iPhone? They stated they were overwhelmed by the number of people wanting an iPhone.
My point is that if they had access to heaps of stock, why didn't they just keep taking deposits? Surely any business would be thrilled to take advance orders if they could support it.
Unfortunately I think they are only going to have enough iPhones to cover the 14,000 deposits they accepted.

there was a report that apple has ordered over 3,000,000 iPhones for the launch period from appleinsider so lets hope that aust gets a good chunk (3,000,000 / 22 countries = 136,363.636)

Haha, yeah because they're really going to get handed out evenly.
More than half will go to the states, guaranteed.

for the first week or so aust would need approx 50,000. 20,000 each to voda and optus and 10,000 to telstra. Now why do you ask well both voda and optus committed first and its public opinion is higher than telstras, yes telstra might have more coverage but the people out in the country/regional areas are really struggling by the other means like petrol/diesel other transport related costs, food, drink, rates, services, wages etc you get my point. so its metro to the rescue for the telcos, as this is were the money is really flowing by demographic plus where the coverage is for voda and optus.

Okay, why don't we work this out? I'm making a numbers document with all the populations, then I'll get a couple of percentages, so we can estimate.
Will post it soon.

They seriously got 14000 people signing up in a little under 24 to 48 hours?
Thats a lot of people - an enormous take up rate for something as boring as a mobile handset (to anyone but us). Hopefully a portion of them may indeed intend to go with vodafone in the end.
I'm sticking with Optus unless Telstra is seriously amazing (which I will doubt) Voda doesn't have 3G coverage in my area.
