Yes confirmed.
The iPhone has usage statistics for calls and data. Unless you reset them of course.

Dude, I have a v1 iPhone. When you go into Settings the fourth option down is Usage when pressed it gives you:
Time since last full charge
Usage
Standby
Call time
Current Period
Lifetime
Edge Network Data
Sent
Received
And a Reset Statistics button.
I don't use Edge data because I'm on Vodafone - however the data did go up when I had data enabled on my sim. I'd guess that a 3g version will do the same.

It's also worth noting (if someone hasn't already, so forgive me if they have) that you can unlock your prepaid for $80. I'd rather just pay it than use any hacks that may be released. This is in the fine print on the prepaid page (if you can load it!)

Because then the max you will be charged is $x, they can't get $x+10 out of you.
Also people who hit the max usage may be in an emergency and have to call, but they can't because Optus has blocked them. Imagine the lawsuits.

Network Locking: Apple iPhone handsets are locked to the Optus network. An $80 fee applies if network locking is removed within the first 6 months from the activation date. Alternatively, if you recharge to the value of $80, no fee applies.
|
Sounds like the way to go, rather than mess around with the iPhone.

Me. The equivalent iPod touch is $499 so the difference is a bit pricey but it's cheaper than what I paid for my first-gen 5GB iPod.
Turbo Cap: All credits expire within 30 days. Exclusions apply to MyBonus and MyTime Money. Once your MyCredit balance has been exhausted you must recharge to use these services. Maximum credit totals and special international rates apply. Recharges of $40 or more include MyData. Offer may expire or be withdrawn at any time, visit Optus - Personal - Pre-Paid Mobile for more details.
The 30 days limit is a bit of a pain but pre-paid does give the option of getting it unlocked which may benefit from more competition next year.

Makes me wonder, if they are being locked more or less like other phones now, does that mean an Optus phone will work with Virgin without needing to pay that fee? I guess time will tell. Probably can't justify paying $850 for a phone when I can get it for $0 (all other things being equal, as I will be paying about the same amount per month).

Vodafone is the same, hence why i left them after 3x $1500 bills for a $79 cap.

Even though the iPhone has this usage meter, I would think that if you're close to your cap limit, you wouldn't know where you really are, because of flagfalls, free phone calls to Optus GSM phones etc, which the iPhone won't be picking up.
