from my understanding of iphone

i want to buy a 16GB iphone i understand with telstra you can be on a $30 dollar a month plan with a upfront cost of $399 dose that $399 go towards paying off the iphone so if the iphones full cost was $699 does that $399 dollars make it so then u only owe $300 dollars to the phone.

No. The upfront cost is $399 + the months subscription fees. Total is $1200 I think.

The $399 goes towards paying for the 16GB and is an upfront cost to obtain the iPhone on contract.

If the outright pricing was $699, you pay the full unsubsidised cost of $699.

You don't get some sort of discount of $399 (on outright pricing) on the 16GB because a contract is different to outright (RRP) pricing.
