Never waited more than five minutes on the phone to Virgin and love the online billing, free V-to-V and the generous caps.
I won't go so far as to say that the prioritisation comments are 'crap' (I don't know if they're true or not) but I have had as much trouble with an Optus-Optus phone as I have had on Virgin with regards to the network. All of the 3G networks are droppy in my experience, the only one I haven't tried extensively is Telstra's NextG and for the money I doubt it's worth it.
Out of curiosity, apart from fanboi comments on Whirlpool (everyone I know on Virgin Broadband is deliriously happy), is there any real evidence of Virgin/Optus prioritisation? Just curious because I find the performance identical. As in ordinary on both! :-)
---edit...one more thing-----
I always said Virgin would be the best network - buy it prepaid, switch to Virgin. They've got the best contract deal now, too. Pity there isn't a cheaper option (?) for someone bringing their own.

I'll second the lucky comment. I had a phone with Virgin mobile ages ago and the customer service was shitful.
The de-prioritisation is also very real. I've seen two identical nokias, one with a virgin sim, one with an optus sim, and the optus sim phone has full service. The other, had 1 bar. Swap sim cards, same deal. Was a network issue, not a phone issue. This is common practise in the MVNO world and whilst Optus own virgin outright now after purchasing them, they still run it as an MVNO, ie cheap data and voice, so de-prioritise in order to not canibalise their Optus sales.

i have both virgin and optus services for two years now.
from my experience, there isn't concrete evidence of network prioritisation.
as for customer service experience, i would have to say tht u r lucky to get through to someone in virgin within 30 minutes. fr my experience with virgin, i had to wait at least 40 mins. optus used to be slightly better with an average wait time of 30 mins, but now, they've improved heaps. i've never waited more than 5 minutes.

re: customer service
Don't get me wrong, I should probably said I may have been lucky. :-) My wife had a single phone on Virgin a few years ago and, once again, we were quite happy. As you guys say, just lucky I guess...
I don't think the networks are prioritised, though. There's just no hard evidence, well, evidence that is more than anecdotal...

There are a few people on these forums making this claim. I'll admit to being a Virgin customer (happy not to have been ripped off with data since I got my iPhone) but I am yet to see any real evidence of this other than purely anecdotal.
You have run an experiment, but have you seen, or do you know of any other evidence to back this up? I would be very curious to see it. I will rethink Virgin if that is the case, not because I depend on first-rate coverage/network service, but because I fucking hate the idea of being misled in any way about what I pay for.

So has anyone ordered an iphone through Virgins "iphone hotline"? Spoke to them earlier and got told the deals. Just called them back to order two black 16Gb iphones.... they shut at 8.00pm. Damn! They did say that there would be around a one month wait for the black 16Gb. Worldwide shortage supposedly. Don't know if Optus/Voda and Telstra have the same shortages.

When I called Virgin they told me to call their "iphone hotline". Actually it was their broadband sales line. They were taking orders though for existing Virgin customers only, for delivery early next week. Apparently they only have a few hundred phones to be shared between their web sales and phone sales depts. Don't suppose they'll last long. I'll have to call first thing in the morning

Great analysis Ozimac.
Someone needs to start a thread on August 11 and everyone needs to post how much data they used in the first month. We're all worried about how much data you get when in reality I think the downloads limits are just way over what any sane individual is likely to use.

I don't have an iPhone as yet as I couldn't really justify it but I am liking these plans. Should I go ahead with it considering I live on the NSW Central Coast. I looked at the coverage map and it looks like it is covered so I don't think it's a big risk to take.
Appreciate help if anyone else lives in that area and coverage they have with Virgin/Optus.
