Yep - Optus pre-paid 16Gb iPhone for me... $80 unlock and Virgin $30 plan with $15 for 1Gb data.

Perfect... except for Virgin not supporting conference calls (which I'll have to live with)

Regards,
Shane.

I have a feeling that it'll be sold now thru Apple, and I imagine $899 might be the outright price.

I can't see how this model (at least in Australia) would hurt anyone - if you stick through to the end of a plan with a carrier (for example, the 24 month $79 cap plan with Optus) you can get the handset for free or quite decently subsidised.

There's a real advantage to doing that and picking the level of subsidy/contract lock-in you're comfortable with, compared to the cost of buying outright and paying an equivalent amount monthly in service fees anyway (thereby being more out of pocket).

So the choice as it currently stands is - pay more for flexibility or pay less for loyalty (the latter being my personal choice). Why should the carriers be afraid of Apple selling it outright when their own deals may ultimately be more favourable to the consumer?

Yeah, it's to do with the SIM.

As I understand it..(and I could be very wrong)...there's a network ID and a little icon in each SIM that tells the phone what to display for the network ID (there's a name for it, digging deep in my ex-One.Tel brain for the term...Operator ID?) on the screen.

The iPhone doesn't pay any attention to that, it just yanks it off the air. There's a hack in Installer from Simon Wright of Whirlpool fame that installs the network logos. I have the Yes Optus logo from my (thankfully gone) Optus days and haven't been bothered to change it.

Here's hoping they've fixed that with the 3G release.

I'm very aware of that fix and have been using it on my iPhone 1.0 since I got it. The problem is going to be the iPhone 3G which at this stage (a) can't be hacked & (b) I'm not sure I want to even if it can be.

So here's hoping Apple look at the ID in the SIM card and display it correctly, which they should now seeing it is a Worldwide phone (easier than creating a database on the phone of all carriers).

Regards,
Shane.

Did we end up determining whether you could attach more than one data plan with Virgin, ie. 2 x 1GB/$15 = $30?

Also, apparently with Virgin's 3G modems, they cap the speed at 500kbps (1/7th of what it should be), do they do this with mobiles too?

What's stopping Virgin getting the iPhone?....nothing.
We will not see any more carriers get the iPhone, in July at least. I'd expect that 3 MAY join the party around January. Virgin may be always a....iPhone virgin as its really up to Optus.

Only speculation, nobody knows except Apple.

I just ported my number from Vodafone to Virgin. It took about thirty minutes and now I am on the $30 cap ($130) with the $15 data add-on (1GB) and with no contract. I mainly did it to see if I will get much out of mobile browsing, which I hadn't bothered to set up despite having my iPhone since launch. If I don't use it much then I won't get a iPhone 3G and if I do then I will already be signed up for what looks like a pretty good plan, certainly better than what Optus have announced.
