The thing with 3, aren't they owned by Hutchinsons? They already have a deal in Hong Kong...have no idea why it wouldn't be offered here on 3? Considering it will be a 3G enabled phone? But 3 have to resort to petitions. Which is kinda sad and desperate.

Probably different people involved in negotiations here than in HK, that maybe have more demands.

I used to be with Virgin but I left them because they were very slow keeping up with the other Telcos with regard to getting WAP enabled phones or internet etc. I do miss them though for their very cheap calls and texts and free voicemail. I can't see them getting the iPhone anytime soon.

But then, when Singapore got the deal for the iPhone on Singtel, we kinda knew that Optus would be getting here...LONG before the official announcement was made. The same goes for Vodafone. So one would apply the same reasoning behind Hutchinson and 3.

Yes, except the 3 people here appear to have totally screwed up somehow. I think we can also forget about Virgin for a while. They announced an amazingly good deal today ... to try and offset the iPhone effect.
I'd say every man and his dog will have this puppy by Christmas .... just not straight away.

Last thing I heard was that you can actually put a Virgin SIM in an Optus-locked phone and it will work without paying unlocking fees (as they are the same network after all). So you could buy it on Optus prepaid and put your old SIM in it. Though that won't work for those who need the plan to pay it off.

Recently Optus and Virgin have tightened up on network locking to the point that one does not work in the other anymore.
As in, i've got a bunch of Virgin Nokia 6131s sitting in my store... the old lot work with optus, the newer lot don't. Optus pre-paids are (unfortunately) in the same vain aswell.

Ugh, I'm so suprised that people are finding those Optus prices reasonable, I love my 1st gen iPhone, and I so so so want to get the 3G, but hell, that's incredible. I'm thinking I'll stay on Virgin, and buy it outright at an Optus Store or something. Hopefully we'll be able to software unlock the iPhone from Optus reasonably quickly so I can keep going with the new iPhone Anybody else planning to do the same thing?

Man, just spend the $80 and get it unlocked and still enjoy the warranty. No need to wait, as I understand it.

i agree pay the $80 to officially unlock it and keep the warranty. if you can afford 800-900 bucks for it outright, you are better and can afford to do that.

Virgin sounds like a good plan to me :P I can't stand the thought of spending that much money on a phone, even though it IS an iPhone :P I love my 1G, I can't wait
I guess I can probably deal with no warranty, it's not like I'm used to keeping them, I'm one of those people that just has to see how things work, how far they can be pushed (software wise) :P Warranties typically last about a day with me :P
