+1
IMHO, Telstra have hit the plan 'sweet spot' for the iPhone - enough for your average Joe to afford one in the first place, and just enough for your sweet sixteen year-olds to justify to the parents to have one, and yet still enough to be making a decent amount.
Kudos to Telstra!

So this is going to be a stupid question, but do you have to be employed to sign a contract? I'm a student. Or do my parents sign...

But you don't broadcast you carrier to WiFi only your MAC address (which is changeable)!
And yes Optus do have WiFi hotspots but not very many.

Exocet, looks like you turned from Telstra shill into nay-sayer in a matter of moments...
Cheers
Steffen.

Credit or debit?
I have a VISA debit which is pretty much the same as a credit, except it draws on my own funds without borrowing and no interest/charges.

<<< De-lurks and signs up to the forum.
A few weeks ago I terminated my contract with Telstra (after 7 years with them) for two reasons: - I was under the impression thet they wouldn't have the iPhone, not as soon as the other 2 aussie telcos at least.
- I had planned on leaving them anyway as I had enough of the less-than-stellar charges/plans they have.
So I called Telstra and they quoted me $350 to cancel one year into my latest two year plan. I thought that was OK and then called Optus to get my number ported over to their $49 cap month-by-month plan so I could move to Vodafone should they have the best iPhone deal.
Skip forward a few weeks and Telsra does this out of the blue, I called 1800IPHONE and the lovely lass that I spoke to said that if I chose to come back to Telstra for the iPhone they "should" be able to void the $350 fee, to get me back. I going to take that with a massive grain of salt, but if I decide that I am up for a few more years of being diddled by Telstra it may not end up being as painful as it could have been....it may actually be cheaper than if I had stayed with them and cancelled my current plan to move to an iPhone one....
Will see what happens. Like most of you I expect that we may get something a little more substantial (than the emails sending me to Apple.com.au) from Optus and Vodafone in the near future.

I dunno, the carrier usually checks your credit history.
I dunno how/if it works with debit cards also. They may need to verify with your bank and see bank statements etc.

And be over 18. If you ever sign a contract when you are under 18 and don't have a parent sign it too, feel free to break it.
