So basically it looks like we'll be comparing at least three carriers (at this stage) on the day and then racing down to one of the Stores to find out that they have sold out

I was hoping to arrive at opening on the Saturday (12th) morning at the carrier store at the my local shopping Centre. I really hope that will still be fine. I was told by staff member that if I called on the Friday she would hold it for me for Saturday morning, she didn't seem to have a problem with that at all. (Vodafone). However, I don't know if she was a manager of if circumstances have changed since.

I sent another message off to the Telstra executive who is handling iPhone in hopes to get some offerings for the rough first gen users. Decryption thinks my gesture is noble and others think Apple & Telstra don't give a stuff about the rough iPhone users.

I wonder if we start up a petition to Apple & the phone companies we could get some action ?

When I called Telstra's chat help yesterday, the lass informed that Telstra would be releasing iPhone for retail shops and dealers on the 11th July. She said that for any model of Telstra's phones, the plan and cost would not be released until the phone(including iPhone) is released!! in a typical arrogant Telstra way!!! However she also informed that iPhone would be available for consumers to buy on the 11th July....
Would you be willing to que up in front of a Telstra shop without knowing anything about the plans????
Most overseas carriers are allowing for credit check and contracts to be finalised before 11 July, so that paperworks dont hold up for the ques to get lengthtier, however Telstra's response of saying walk in to our stores on July 11th and we will tell you our plans sounds stupid . . .

Probably not. You will, I think, be making do with your hacked phone as best you can, or be buying a new 3G model.

Telstra has been working towards the iphone for some time now, and I really don't think they are going to make any concessions for anyone who has a prvious model iphone.

The bottom line being that Telstra is aiming at the best iphone experience in the world, bar none. and they have the means to deliver it. Connecting 2G phones is not in their interest.

In the case of Telstra they have EDGE network and to support the first gen iPhone would not be much to do from there network standpoint. I should know I designed mobile network equipment. This would be a good will gesture that would show how Apple & Telstra do care about the customer.

Numbers my friend. The number of 2G phones in Australia is unimportant to the overall picture. They won't be too concerned. Best offer I can see you getting is a free 3G on a 2 year plan.

And as for Apple. Well let's face it, you have an item, on which you have voided your warranty, what do you expect Apple to do. They have no legal or moral obligation to assist you. Again, they would say, well I guess you better buy a 3G model, and can I offer you Applecare with that.

Let's face it, you always knew this would be your situation once the iphone was released here.
