So the phone would reject a Prepay SIM?

Anyway, updated with Mexico:

Wow, just noticed how royally screwed Denmark is. Isn't the TCO a little misleading, considering that Denmark you are only getting 6 months of service for that price? Also shouldn't Norway be brown, not red?

Thanks for providing this excellent resource!

Yep, you're right.

Are you sure you're not confusing Denmark and Norway, or are Norway's contracts really only 6 months?

I said Denmark was 6 months.

The only thing I meant with Norway is that it's no longer the highest monthly price, so shouldn't only Denmark be red in the "cheapest plan" column?

Good point, in order to get a balanced comparison of TCO across all the countries, plans and plan durations, they need to be normalised to a fixed period of time, eg

say we take 12 months as the reference point, USA 8GB should be ($1911/2)= $955.5, and Denmark 8GB would be ($1101*2) = $2202. Comparatively, Australia seems an awfully good deal at $816 for the 8GB over 12 months

Sorry, I saw the part where you said Norway being brown, and just filled in Norway everywhere.

As for normalising the TCO, it defeats the purpose, because having the TCO for the USA as 12 months is meaningless because you can't get it for 12 months, meaning it's not the TCO anymore, and for Denmark being 12 months, that's not a TCO because you don't need to be on it for 12 months.

Would it be possible to get another one of these but have the Handset repayment totals and upfront costs put in so we can see who actually get's the cheapest phone.

Well the only country with handset repayments is us, and they're added together in the subsidised columns. However the price does change over plans, and the only way to see who has the cheapest phone is to outline EVERY plan in EVERY county.

Although on certain plans both the UK and Australia have completely free phones (zero up front, zero repayments).

Correct. Not sure why but a friend of mine that works for the competition suggested that it may be due to limited initial stock levels but I doubt it.

Is the pre-paid option off the table in other countries as well or are we in NZ the odd ones out?

A few countries offer prepaid, more don't.

Optus in Australia is offering prepaid phones for $923NZD for 8GB and $1075NZD for 16GB, that also includes $506NZD and 1GB credit, which expires in 30 days.

There was a second tab of other plans.. but looks like they pulled the page again.

Edit: the home page now refers to plans but the linked page has returned to the pre register page - not a cache issue as was just on the updated page
