I haven't seen it asked on here yet and I'm curious: Why is there such a desire to have the iPhone next Friday? Is it a pissing contest so you can go on forums and say "I've got one"? Is it a psychological issue where you feel that having the latest gadget will make you popular or cool? Or is just having something that others want provides some schadenfreude? There may be other reasons: I'd like to understand what they are.

Why is there desire to buy any gadget on launch day, or see a movie on opening night, or buy a book on the first day it's released? Some of the reasons you mentioned may well apply to some people, but I'd suggest there's a more personal motivation of wanting to enjoy something you've waited for as soon as possible.
Personally, I didn't bother with the original iPhone. A year ago, I said I'd wait for the 2nd-gen and Australian release. That's now less than a week away. Of course I want the bloody thing in my hands on Friday!
There's also the potential issue that, if you don't get it on Friday, you might not get one for several weeks or longer. It's still trivial in the grand scheme of things, but it can also be fun to get caught up in the hype once in a while...

Overwhelmingly, I think for most of the people on this forum, it would be sheer technolust (and I said it elsewhere, given the fact that even the original iPhone has been available and accessible to Australians for a year, this is far more muted than it was last year).
Secondly, there's obviously an air of concern about the shortage of supply and the possible wait times for the next batch of units. Apple dealt with this really well over last year's iPhone launch, but then again this is Australia, we are a smaller market, and they are servicing a nearly global launch this time around, so there may be a bit of a justifiable air of desperation about this now too.
Having said that, there are always undoubtedly some people who are in it for the schadenfreude and just want to be walking down the street on Friday with a shiny new toy that makes others green. Which I guess they're entitled to, if it works out for them.
Of course, it goes without saying that I'm rooting for the people in the first two categories to sneak in before supplies run out

It would be more like... O yeah I'm down at a site office, heading back to the office now. My Boss luckily works in Brisbane and I at the Gold Coast office. I'm just one of those people with the worst luck at times.

I want one because my SE is dying a slow death and the Sony Erricson W960i is not available anywhere. I also want it so I have complete understanding of the phone when the boss buys one and has troubles with it. It will only be a matter of time for him to drop his Blackberry (which I do not own or understand how to help with) for a iPhone.
I will probably line up the night before at the Optus store on George Street.

I want one because I'm like a child who doesn't want to wait until Christmas to open his presents!
