France Telecom's Orange said Thursday it will launch Apple's much anticipated iPhone 3G in France on July 17th with prices starting at 149 euro ($233) for the 8GB model.

Handset prices and plans

The exclusive French carrier of the touch-screen handset said the 16GB model will fetch 199 euro. Both subsidized prices require that customers also purchase a subscription to one of its existing "Orange for iPhone" plans (below), or its Origami Star (from 3 hours), First or Jet plans.

With other plans (except time-cutoff and pay-as-you-go), the 8Gb iPhone will sell from 199 euro and the 16Gb model from 249 euro, Orange said. For instance, customers can get the 8GB model for 199 euro with a one-hour Origami Star plan that costs 32 euro and offers up to 500MB of monthly internet access.

Meanwhile, "Orange for iPhone" plans (below) start at 49 euro per month for a plan that includes 2 hours of normal talk time, 2 hours of late evening and weekend minutes, and 50 SMS text messages. The most expensive plan is priced at 149 euro and includes 12 hours of normal talk time, 12 hours of nights and weekends, and 1000 SMS messages. All "Orange for iPhone" plans include Visual Voicemail and up to 500MB of monthly data usage.

Orange will also offer the 8Gb 3G iPhone from 199 euro and the 16Gb version from 249 euro with a 24-month contract under its loyalty upgrade program.

Preferential upgrade offer

As part of the carrier's "Change your mobile" promotion, Orange customers who purchased an iPhone before 12 June 2008 and are using it with an Orange plan (except time-cutoff, Initial and Mobicarte) will be able to buy the 3G iPhone for 99 euro through a 100 euro refund valid until 31 October 2008. The offer requires a 24-month contract.

iPhone 3G for business

The 3G iPhone will also launch for Orange Business Services clients on July 17th. Business clients will also be eligible for the "Change your mobile" offer.

Orange said its 3G network currently covers over 66 percent of the French population.
EDIT. Here are the converted prices.

4H talk time, 50 SMS, unlimited data* - $80AU
6H talk time, 100 SMS, unlimited data* - $97AU
10H talk time, 150 SMS, unlimited data* - $130AU
16H talk time, 1000 SMS, unlimited data* - $195AU
24H talk time, 1000 SMS, unlimited data* - $244AU

*read as 500mb

It is in Euros firstly, not Dollars. And of course us Australians are used to paying exorbitant mobile and data rates.

I wouldn't mind that, although I would want the plan prices to go down.

How hard is it to give me a plan that is $0/month and I just pay for the calls & SMS I make?

(not pre-paid, I want post-paid - so I pay per month for what I've used)

Three used to do that.. didn't they? what's cool is that their site has an archive of all the plans they've had since the beginning.

Given the costs of calls these days you'd probably end up spending a lot more than you would if you just signed up for a $20 Cap. If it was just pay for what you use that's only 4 5 minute calls a month for $20! So unless you make less than that, other than asking why you even own a phone, signing up for a plan makes sense. If you're getting a phone with your plan then you can't get that sort of thing because you have to pay for the phone.

You are correct - so why don't the teclos advertise their rates as 10c/30 sec for example instead of giving us all this "free" credit?

I like how iSIM do their pre-paid: 19.5c/30 sec - no flag fall. For $20/month, that's 51 minutes of call time. On a $19 Optus cap, I get 54 minutes, but have to pay a 35c flag fall. SMSs are only 15c on iSIM, but 25c on Optus.

Which is what they used to do before they all jumped on to the marketing deception that is the 'cap plan.' Sounds wonderful, $500 credit for $79 (or whatever), but when the rates are bumped up the $500 becomes meaningless.

When comparing iSim to normal monthly caps, if you want more than 50 minutes EVERY Cap plan is a better option, even Telstra.

iSim is Grey, minutes mapped to recharge amount. This is compared to Monthly Caps as I lost the prepaid analysis, which showed pretty much the same thing.

As for why they don't market it that way, because it doesn't sound as good. What sounds better: 10c for 30 seconds? or Spend $50 get $500?

The way I'd like to see carriers do things is the same as the US, just tell me how many minutes I get!
