I'd read somewhere (can't find the article now) that the reason that there isn't cut & paste on the iphone yet, isn't so much due to technical reasons, but a UI one. They have pretty much established a couple of standard touch gestures for zooming, scrolling etc. they just haven't worked out the best way to represent cut/copy/paste yet.

I am always bemused by the "it only has a 2MP camera" comments.
I would have thought that if taking high quality photographs of at least 5MP is size was so important to you - err.... buy a proper camera; this is a phone.
what do I know anyway??

If there's one thing I hate, it's MMS. The cost associated with sending the data on most carriers is extreme. You might as well email pictures from the phone, or there should be a way to MMS for cheaper using the 3G internet connection, but that won't happen since phone companies enjoy their revenue a little too much.
It's akin to the way VOIP will kill land lines eventually. You can either pay for a certain amount of internet each month and use a phone on VOIP anywhere for cheap, or you can go through the old way and pay 25c for each phone call with exhorborant international charges.
VOIP > Land line POTS phone system
Email on phone > MMS
It's the same argument. The only problem right now is that until more phones support the receiving of email, MMS will be the only real way to make sure your pictures get to another person's phone. So I'm happy the iPhone has no MMS, since I hate it, and I hope it only spurs forward the death of the technology itself.

the iPhone is the most popular cameraphone used on flickr, despite being 'only' 2MP, and all the other phones on the top 5 list having more megapixels - Nokia N95 (5MP), Nokia N73 (3.2MP), SE K800i (3.2MP), Nokia N82 (5MP).
This means:
(a) a lot more iPhone owners are also Flickr users
(b) the other phone cameras are just a pain to use, or to upload the photos from the phone to your computer or to Flickr directly.

While the article is silly and overstated, it does bring up legitimate gripes with the phone.
I don't think you do Mac users much of a service when you rebut almost every point with "you're dumb for wanting that."
Flash, for example, would be hard to implement, but not having it *is* worse than having it! If I had the choice, I would certainly rather have Flash on my phone than not have it. Same with a better camera, same with MMS, same with GPS.

There is a way to do it - on Windows Mobile you hold done on text for longer than a second and a pop up menu comes up. It worked the same way on the Newton as well (holding down for longer than a second, then dragging across the text, then dragging the selected text to to the side of the screen). It is possible

We don't want stinking Flash support. Adobe Flash also sucks - it's refreshing not to have it on my mobile phone. I don't think I've come across a website yet where I've missed the Flash capability. Adobe Flash is a pox on our web browsers and is only good for one thing - video sites like YouTube and such. Any site using Flash for navigational purposes needs to be re-designed and the developer should buy a book on Javascript.

This would have to be one of the worst attempts at rebuttal I have ever read, an extremely childish and unprofessional response. You can't on one hand want MacTalk to be a more professional, respected site and on the other write garbage like that.

can I clarify?.....I use Notes in address book a lot, will they sync with iPhone? sorry for the silly question, not seen an iPhone yet.
However, my third party telco said to me today that if I can buy one outright I can use it with them (Southern Cross Telco)...but no 3G of course.

Agreed. This was a pathetic attempt. Calling people stupid because they use MMS (not that i do anyway) is the lowest form. Grow up and write a properly thought out response rather than just saying anyone elses view point 'sucks'

I might be shot down for saying this, but I don't know why everyone has to be so sensitive about criticism of Apple products. Who cares if people criticise them? I know they are good. My friends know they are good and I am always talking them up. If people want to hate on Apple products, let them. By constantly having to rebute criticism, it only feeds their ignorant views and makes us look like precious idiots.
Last but not least, I am a little disappointed about the lack of MMS. I use it often and find it hard to believe that shitty bargain basement Nokia's can do it and the Apple iPhone can't...

Childish and unprofessional criticisms can be good, provided they're done with a degree of wit (see anything by Charlie Brooker).

I too hate the flash navigation on websites, which I know will frustrate me when I click one on the iPhone. A lot of these problems are more with receiving than sending, like the shit-filled emoticon messages which aren't comprehensible without being able to see them, or the uninformed friend who sends you an MMS message.
Just thought how much it sucks with having a "home" button but no "end" button for scrolling. I can just see someone touching the top of the screen as I make futile attempts at scrolling to the bottom.

Apple is a big boy, I don't think they need (or care) about vigilante knights in shining armor defendign their honor any more than they give two hoots about people making lists of things they don't like about the iPhone.
They're grown ups; they market a product in full knowledge that it won't be suitable for 100% of the world population (or even remotely liked by many of them)
that said, logic and rationality asside. FANBOYS ATTACK
