Do you think you can walk into a shop, plonk down $200 and go away with an iPhone with no contract?

The iPhone is not for me for the following reasons:
- I have another year on my contract with 3.
- I'm happy with 3.
- I like having a 3MP camera in my phone (5MP would be better. 2MP is a huge step backward and hardly worth having IMHO)
- For $54 per month ($49 Cap [min $30 spend] + $5 for a 10MB Web & mail pack) I get more than I generally need and never any nasty surprises.
- I can play music on my phone, stored on a 2GB miniSD card which admittedly is not as easy to manage as iTunes but I have my 10 most favourite albums, enough for the amount of listening I do on my phone.
- My Nokia N73 is big and chunky enough. The iPhone is thinner but wider.
- I like to see Decryption get angry. He's so cute when he's mad

My mindset might change as my contract nears its end. Maybe by then 3 will be offering the iPhone on a nice plan that suits me and Apple will have seen the point in having a decent camera built into a mobile phone.

I'm not getting one because I don't need one.
Nokia 6300 + iPod 5G is just what I need.

You're right. I don't and I haven't, and likely I won't ever; but thanks for the explanation.

I lucked out on buying 2 gen 1 iPhones, so I figure that is an omen I'm in the family with skid lids category, so a 3g iPhone is out of the question.
I still think we are going to get shafted on the plans anyway.......

Have you tried using this? I'm controlling my N95 content right there in iTunes.

I want to be able to ignore my phone by listing to my iPod Touch on the train, not have it beep in my ear that someone is bothering me on my way home.

I'm in Tassie too, I hate Telstra but no other carrier works here.
I too will only buy one outright, I'll never ever get sucked into telstra plans again.
For me there is not rush, I use a Palm Treo, they are great for all I do, but sync is not always great using Mark/space. For this reason I would welcome an iPhone for better syncing with the macbook.
I'll wait till I can have a good look at one and see what data prices are like.

Main reason for me is cost, and the fact that I already have an iPod Touch. While carrying only one device around would be nice, I doubt I'd be able to afford the monthly cost to have a data plan anyway, so wouldn't use the iPhone for mobile internet. Therefore, other than calls and text (which my phone does just fine) the iPhone will do everything my iPod Touch can do.
Not to mention, I'll have more battery life out of each device because they'll be separate. Only have to charge each one about once a week.
Haven't decided yet on whether I'll get one or not, though. Totally depends on how much buying one with prepaid (Vodafone) will cost. My iPod Touch is a 16GB, so I'm definitely not going backwards with an 8GB iPhone. I'm guessing the outright cost with prepaid will be about $800 for the iPhone 16GB.
Can't really justify that.
If I didn't already have an iPod Touch then hell yeah, I'd be getting one for sure. Cannot wait for the app store
