Obviously I could be wrong, but all I see is people saying it's the law, with no proof whatsoever.
I've done a fair bit of research, and as far as I can see, there are provisions in various Fair Trade Practises/Consumer Protection Acts that mandate that carriers must unlock the phone for a customer if they request it. I was also talking to the manager of a Vodafone reseller, who said this was indeed the case.

$699 is not expensive for the 8GB iPhone.

Outright prices on Next Mobile
  • HTC TyTN II: $1059
  • iPhone 16GB: $999
  • N95 8GB: $799
  • iPhone 8GB: $699
  • HTC Touch Dual: $729
  • LG Viewty: $588
  • N95 SD: $575

Considering features and technology those iPhone prices fit right in, they are completely normal and expected.
I'd agree with that. So many people seem to - and it's hard to say this without calling them stupid, think that Steve meant the iPhone would be yours for $200 with no strings attached. It was not even meant to be like that when it was $600.

Remember you are getting an iPod touch + phone + mobile browser, which will all be good if the plans are decent.

N95 has 5MP. So too does the LG.

The TyTN has 3MP and the Touch Dual has 2MP.

Edited post with some specs, HTC touch Dual has 2MP, TyTN only 3MP.

iPhone 8GB is $100 cheaper than the N95 8GB (according to rumour), has 3MP less for the camera, but a much much larger touch screen.
