But don't we pay $0.00 upfront in most contracts in Australia?

But doesn't the web browser, iPod and general interface on most phones suck?

There are still contracts that will cost you something for the handset.
Most are $0 "free" (but not really).

Blackberrys and Windows Mobile-based units always seem to be just shy of a grand outright...so $999 doesn't really surprise me (I almost figured it would be about $1100 when it came here to buy outright before the price drop was announced)
Even my Sony Ericcson k800i was $800 outright when it first came out...

I am sick of people bringing this up, there's no law that mandates carriers unlock phones on request, they just choose to let you.
Obviously I could be wrong, but all I see is people saying it's the law, with no proof whatsoever.

There was no price drop, the phone is cheaper because carriers subsidise it, and you pay it back monthly. Whether there was a 'price drop' or not the outright price would be the same.

You rock for posting this.
This seems too high to me.
$1000 for 16GB iPhone...who is really going to buy that?
$300 for 8Gb flash...
My guess is this is not the true price

When will people realise the iPhone will be expensive!?

Nah...if it is law for a $75 fee then "3" and Vodafone break it...I've seen "3" demand $300 to unlock a phone and Voda have a page on their website to do it for free!

I call bs.
This practically proves that Telstra will be selling the iPhone - Domayne only deal with Telstra stuff anyway, why would they have it in their system if they won't be able to sell it as an authorised apple (premium?) reseller?
The price is hopefully wrong as well - if the model numbers are a placeholder, then hopefully, so is the price.

I mean price drop...only in relation to the original price of the iPhone as $599 for 8Gb compared to $199 for this version (both prices announced by steve) so not really price drop in the traditional sense of the word.

That was known already, when you take into account the 'true' cost of owning an iPhone.
e.g. AT&T old model (revenue sharing) vs AT&T new model (activation in store + contract).
Works out to be almost identical in terms of price. Maybe even $10-20 more.

Ok, this is getting on my nerves.
$699 is not expensive for the 8GB iPhone.
Outright prices on Next Mobile (except iPhone, prices are form this rumour). - HTC TyTN II: $1059
- GPS: No
- Camera: 3MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 1GB
- iPhone 16GB: $999
- GPS: Yes
- Camera: 2MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 16GB
- N95 8GB: $799
- GPS: Yes
- Camera: 5MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 8GB
- iPhone 8GB: $699
- GPS: Yes
- Camera: 2MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 8GB
- HTC Touch Dual: $729
- GPS: No
- Camera: 2MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 0.256GB
- LG Viewty: $588
- GPS: No
- Camera: 5.1MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 0.100GB
- N95 SD: $575
- GPS: Yes
- Camera: 5MP
- HSDPA: Yes
- Memory: 0.160GB
Considering features and technology those iPhone prices fit right in, they are completely normal and expected.

Yeah I would be prepared to pay $699 for the 8GB (2nd gen).
Why? Because I paid $699 for the 8GB (1st gen).
