The original ones were sold only from AT&T or Apple and had a different business/revenue model.

Well anyway, if they sell them with pre-pay options why would you ever buy one outright? Pre pay should be easy to kill I'd say. Unless they make it a pre pay contract??

Oh well, I won't bother buying a mobile phone then. I was expecting it to be around $700.00 for the 16GB.

The original iPhone wasn't 3G and didn't have GPS either, it was running on at least 4 year old technology, cheap.
When will people realise the iPhone will be expensive!?

Why? If you're a student without a credit card and without a job you might not be allowed to sign a contract (financing).
The same reason prepaid kits/phones exist today.
I will definitely be getting a prepaid iPhone (outright purchase) since I have no other choice.
Also for gifting purposes.
I was given an iPhone (yes I'm spoilt) from my gf and that was an 'outright' (eBay) purchase without contract.

You do realise they won't cost this much? In fact, we will be paying the actual price of the phone, there is no Apple revenue anymore so its just an outright cost (without any subsidy) there I'd put these Phones at 549 and 649 (random guess but it will not be 999.99)
Thanks anyway!

I doubt they'll offer an unlocked version. You'll be able to pay the nominal $75 or whatever it is to unlock the phone (as per Australian law), but you will need to pay the hefty prepaid fee first.

$549 and $649 would make sense from comparable iPod touch figures and the difference between 8 and 16 ($100) but for some reason I am thinking $699 and $799, with everyone jumping on the 16GB like they did when it was 4 and 8GB.
I don't mind being locked as long as it is to Vodafone (and I don't plan on selling unless I unlock it afterwards ).

$200 is the subsidised price. The carriers do not buy iPhones for $200 and sell it to you for that much (no profit). They pay twice as much if not more to Apple for the 'privilege' of being a carrier. Then they get their money back in voice/data/monthly fees when you're on contract over the 2 years.
$200 is also the upfront price of going on contract for the phone. At least, in the States.
