anyone selling their 1st gen iphone?

because i am very interested in buying one.
the new one will be too expensive and i cannot afford it so i was wondering if any australians are interested in selling their old iphone, im not sure how warranty works but was also wondering if i were to buy a 2nd hand iphone that had been unlocked for australia and it malfunctioned, could i have it repaired by apple?
thanks
tom

This should go in the Wanted To Buy section (which you won't be able to access since you're new).

There will be people selling iPhones but I reckon it will be quite dear because when the new plans come out (and outright pricing) it will be out of reach for most people (or I am just guessing about this).

There is no warranty on first generation iPhones that are hacked. And the 1 year mark is approaching so I think people who bought them and unlocked, etc, will not have purchased AppleCare for iPhone, so it will be out of warranty regardless.

Apple won't repair it if you don't have warranty and it's a first gen iPhone since they weren't even sold in Australia.

Try eBay Tom.

Any jailbroken iPhones are out of warranty and even if you were able to return them to factory fresh state, I doubt Apple Australia would repair any 1st gen iPhone. This is because you couldn't buy 1st gen iPhone in Australia.

You should assume that any second-hand iPhone you buy will be bought as is without warranty.

Well then they won't if you revert it back to factory settings/restore an iPod touch.

You won't have any issues getting a new battery with a touch if it is within warranty, covered by AppleCare etc.

Forgive my ignorance as only just started taking interest in the iPhone as I'm sure many others have now also, but why would the 1st gen prices still be way up there considering the release of the new model?

I woulda thought they'd drop right down in price or is it because as yet the 2nd gen hasn't been released and not hacked yet?

Thank you and great site..

Officially Apple Won't repair any phone that has not been activated with one of its appointed telcos.
I just tried to get mine sorted in the States and was told that the AT&T SIM card that was assigned to my iphone's serial number had never been officially activated and therefore Apple wouldn't repair it, even though it was an obvious factory fault that was wrong with it.

I am trying other avenues with Apple in the Sates at the moment but no luck so far.

This crowd has done good work on my friend's broken screen 'though and I may end up just paying to get it sorted by them.

Good luck in finding one (other than ebay). There were a couple up for grabs on the morning of the 3g announcement, but one was snapped up quick and the other was pulled from sale.

Once people started to read the thread and soak in the announcement, the original iPhones were suddenly worth more. Once pricing comes out, maybe some more will be up for sale. But don't expect any bargains!

All of this is just speculation anyway - we have no idea what kinds of plans and pricing will be available from Optus and Vodafone at this stage, or how much they will cost as a pre-paid unit, which is what I will be going for. I highly doubt they would be over $700 AU on a pre-paid deal, and first gen iPhones were still selling at over $400 the last time I checked, so for the sake of $300, I would be going for the 3G - warranty, support, new technology and extra features are worth it. Not having to screw around with jailbreaking is also a massive bonus.

1. Rarity. There were only 6 million produced. No more.
2. They are unlocked and can be used on any mobile network.
3. They do not require any contracts to be signed or contractual periods (e.g. 12 month, 24 month)
4. You choose the data plan you want, the prepaid plan you want, cap, etc.
5. They will be able to use the newer iPhone 2.0 firmware, the same as on the 3G model.
6. You can't get hold of a 3G iPhone without paying a really high price out right or going on contract.

They're just a few reasons, but it boils down to the fact that it is unlocked, rare, 'cheap' in comparison to the contract price of an iPhone 3G and can still be used with the same firmware that will come out next month.
