You could always be cheap and sign up for a 60 day trial (or however long it is now under MobileMe). Then constantly renewing your subscription under a new trial account (which is pretty dodgy).
EDIT
Yep 60 days.

hahah that is cheap!
I haven't really used any of the email or calender stuff on my mac anyway, so it's not of great use to me. Maybe I should get into it tho. I don't really think I'd use it much. I will just do it all on my iphone instead.

The only thing I can think of that is as pointless as MMS is PTT.
STUPIDEST FEATURE IN A PHONE, EVER!

Just because you use MMS like there's no internet doesn't mean it's worth it
I've used a grand total of 10 MMS in 10 years, 5 of it in the last 3 years. Just for kicks and cuz I can, might as well give it a go. More a PITA when receiving them.
5 years ago video call was expected to be the killer app for 3G. Hardly anyone uses it now. Nobody wants to see earthquakes happening on every call. Ever done a video call on the move? Try it.

yea it kind of sucks my 6 yo Sony Ericsson could send mms's so i think its a bit of a disappointment not having the option to send one if i need to, because if we face reality how soon is it before all the phones are able to send and receive emails?
The big kicker for me is that i can't use it as a 3g modem for my macbook like my current phone, you have no idea how handy it is to hook up your phone via bluetooth to your mac and just have broadband internet anywhere, very good when your stocks make a move and you need to make a quick sell.

PTT is huge in the USA. It's all everyone was using when I was over there. I think it just never took off here, different culture.
I'm pretty sure someone will come up with an app. for you to bluetooth tether your iphone to your macbook, they did for the iphone 1.

I love the comments saying to use email, MMS is too expensive etc..
How expensive is it to have a mail client running all the time polling your mail server to find out if there's new mail? unless every mobile out there gets push email MMS will remain useful.
Just because Steve Jobs gives you some bullshit reason for not having mms like "email is better" doesn't make it true, though you're all welcome to bankrupt yourself with data charges trying to prove me wrong.

Ever wonder what people use MMS for?
I used to... I worked in mobile phone tech support for a year, and one day I found a glitch in the back end systems that gave access to a live stream of MMS messages - you could page through all the mms messages on the system as they were sent (it was supposed to only be available to higher level tech access, but I got bored, and it wasn't hard).
This was a few years ago, but I am sure nothing has changed.
From observation 30-50% of MMS is people sending nudie pics, and those are mostly body part self portraits. Seriously. If pr0n is what people are using MMS for, then I can't see that being an issue for iPhone sales.

I use mms some times. It has it good and bad points. For short vids and small file photos it good but for video calling and bigger files it sucks.

I think probably there are three reason why video calling failed on 3g. First of all the price is expensive. 2nd of all it is as unreliable than paris hilton as a full time partner. Third of all its clunky and poorly intergrated.
1st one apple couldnt do much about. But 2 & 3 Apple could really fix and make it an attractive feature just like they did with web browsing on the iphone. I mean before then web browsing on a mobile phone is awful. Arguably even worse than video calling.

Food for thought: I haven't seen a phone with MMS that doesn't have email as well.
I'm with most people in this thread: MMS sucks and I haven't used it, even thought I've had phones that can do it (ditto for video conferencing).
Also... if it's such a big issue then just use a 3rd party app for it.
