If you look at Japan.. which is where the future lies in mobile tech... (even including the iPhone) MMS is so dead I dont even think it existed here.
Emailing images to each other is how we roll.. and if everybody starts to carry iphones.. or email capable phones.. then who cares about MMS..
(what's more MMS is outrageously expensive - and SMS too for that matter) when considered next to data costs and email.
both functions can be deleted as far as Im concerned.

From my experience, MMS was made useless when bluetooth came to phones. Most MMS' were sent between friends, showing cool pictures or vids etc. Nowadays if a friend wants a photo you just hook up via bluetooth and transfer.
If the person is long distance then you just email it to there address and they check their email whenever they can.
I dont see the big deal not having it

MMS isn't a concern. The ability to cut & paste and the ability to forward emails is more important, I think.
Hopefully Apps will be written to do all these things anyway.

It's not a concern to me on the iphone but with my nokia I use it about once or twice a month. Which I think makes me the biggest MMS user in Australia. I could easily transfer to email/flickr/mobileme to share photos with others mobiles.

I use MMS sometimes, I don't see what the big deal is. It's just another standard phone feature that the Iphone does not have. Can I live without it.. yes... Should I have too no.
No one should be happy about missing features it's as disturbing as people cheering in delight at the announcement firmware upgrades cost money.

I use MMS extensively at the moment - because I can address an MMS to an email address to send pictures to various Twitter-related services.
Why not send email from my Nokia E65 on Three? because everytime I open an email connection it b0rks my web connection until I reboot the phone.
So no loss here. The grandparents can wait until either :
1) they get an iPhone as well - or -
2) they get home and see the photo in their inbox

Can't you send an mms to an email address anyway? And when someone with a non mms capable phone receives a mms don't they get an sms saying visit this url?
How is either of those situations a problem on an iPhone?
EDIT: Hmm, I need more sleep I realise this doesn't cover attempting to send an MMS. Oh well!

I guess i'm out numbered (or out dated!)
I recently posted my first comment on this forum and asked to be convinced that mms wasn't necessary. And then all of a sudden - this pops up. classic. much obliged.
I have to say though, i'm still not convinced. i send mms' quite often because i know that the people i'm sending the pictures to are not going to be checking emails until they are back on their computers (yes, people - i know - some people still only check their emails when on computers).
maybe it comes down to the fact that Apple know that people would not want to send photos taken with a 2mp camera couldn't resist - sorry.
i agree with the video calling. but i still receive video calls, even if i don't make them, and these three things (the camera, mms, and video calling) were deal breakers. but i guess i'm well and truly out numbered - and out-dated on this forum.
my 2 cents (less with foreign exchange rates).

I've only ever sent one MMS in my life..... and it didn't work because the pic I sent was too bug for the screen of the recipient. I don't care about MMS.
Also, who wants to be walking down the street having a video call to someone? Not I.
I think video calling should be left to the conference room.

I have similar views to MMS as Kuma. I can't believe the networks actually managed to convince people to use MMS. If you want an iPhone and want to send your mates a picture, email them the picture and then SMS them to check their email.
I'm not sure how it works here, but in the UK cross network MMS's are only viewable via the web anyway.

I've gotten about 4 or 5 MMS's over the last 30 months that I've been on a 3G phone... so I couldn't care less about the lack of it on the iPhone. The fact that it'll do WiFi and email more than makes up for it for me.

A lot more useful two features for sending stuff would be:
• bluetooth file transfer phone-phone and phone-mac
• wifi ad-hoc file sharing (didn't that get mentioned in keynote?)
And of course it has email and USB too so plenty of ways to send stuff.

3 keep sending me MMSs advertising their services and Indiana Jones.
The only time a real person has sent me an MMS was last May when someone sent me a cartoon of Hitler in a g-string.

Here's the thing: MMS sucks. Do people use it? Sure. Should they? Hell no.
The more people email their photos direct from their phones instead, the faster MMS dies a richly deserved death.
