This is at a cost of $50 - $100 and must be done by a 3 authorised repairer.
Also to note that it will void your phones warranty with apple."

I too are hoping to buy a pre-paid iPhone from either Optus or Vodafone and use it on 3. I do hope it can be unlocked easily.

i did speak to a guy from the optus store yesterday and hes said he knew nothing, but he then also added, it probably wont be locked because were not locking any of our phones anymore... so yea idnt no im not with optus but im pretty sure u could unlock it... only reason why i wouldnt buy it pre-paid and unlock it is if it had gay optus branding on the actual housing and stupid customised software with optus crap on it.. that would be bloody annoying

It didn't tkae long before "officially unsupported" WindowsMobile and other handsets were about to use the full "3" functionality; I'm sure it would only be a matter of time before someone figured out how to unlock the rest.
That is, if anyone actually cares about Planet 3 - if voice, SMS and data work, then I'd suggest that will suit the vast majority of early iPhone 3G adopters.

i can see where majority of these phone companies are coming from....on all the handsets they have their software installed - i think the main reason 3 didn't get the phone is not cause they didn't want to offer it....but they would rather offer a phone that does everything their network supports ie..mms planet 3 software(which can be usefull) i think they are on the ball about this and watching very carefully at what optus and vodafone handle the reception of customers....be it they may be loosing customers in the mean time
that or they just wanted their 3 logo on the back and apple in no way would want that
plus.............
i have a gut feeling around the 1-3 months after the initial release on the 11th of July 3 will make an announcement

With being on 3 and being on contract till April next year I rang myself and I was shocked to hear what came out of the representatives mouth.
I asked her whether three would be getting the iPhone and she told me yes they would be.
I asked when she confirmed on the 11th of July.
I also asked how we will be able to purchase it and she confirmed that you should be able to buy it both online and in-store!
Finally I asked whether I'd be able to upgrade my current plan (bought a E65 on a 29 cap, so Im paying $39 a month) and she said that I will be able to but there will be a fee after confirming it with another person.
Take it as you want, hopefully she wasn't bullshiting me about three getting the phone!

I think the representatives are poorly informed. Reps wouldn't have this info until after 3 announces something, and they haven't.

I also just called 3 (being on contract until December this year) and was told they wouldnt be getting the iphone.
Seems like the representatives are talking out their butt but I would hedge my bets on them not getting it.

While possibly true, why would the reps say such a thing though? Surely by them stating such a remark would leave them open with liability?

yer i am pretty sure she had no idea what she was talking about. unfortunately this happens in this area just like retail...i know as i work in retail first hand and heard so of the most outrageous crap people spill. Either she heard wrong or she is going by rumors who knows.
i'm planning on calling and using my 3 mobile record the conversation...see what happens

Perhaps someone should ring and ask to speak to a supervisor and ask if they've told their phone people to say such things. My guess is that the Phone people are just poorly informed and assuming they'll get the phone.
