VOIP/SIP software for iPhone - Will Apple block it?

What do we reckon about the upcoming App Store and the possibility of a VOIP/SIP client on the iPhone?

Would allowing such applications piss off telcos and lead to Apple blocking it? Will Apple even block things on the App Store?

Nokia has a SIP client on their E series phones - so maybe Apple will turn a blind eye to VOIP applications on the iPhone

Didn't they already say that they wouldn't, but that it would be locked down to Wifi use only?

They've publicly said that VoIP via Wi-Fi is acceptable, VoIP via EDGE/HSDPA is not. Link

Ooh, I didn't know this!
That sounds great - I can use my iPhone as a SIP phone around my house and cancel my landline

Won't you lose ADSL as well if your landline goes?

That's the only reason I'm still paying my monthly line rental, since going over to VOIP.

Typically yes, but not if they happen to be able to get naked DSL with a provider that can do it. No voice service on the line, just the line for DSL sync (and then provider supplies VoIP services rather then the land line service per say).

i do VOIP via a client on my Nokia. i can run all IM service, .. Skype, MSN, AOL, Google talk, Yahoo and SIP. I mostly use via WiFi at home & work, .. but works just the same when i'm out, .. via 3G or normal data.
i can't see Apple having anything to do with restricting this access on an iPhone. I'm with Optus at the mo...

Naked DSL doesn't need a landline

Internode :: Residential :: Internet :: Home ADSL :: Naked

Apple wouldn't have anything to do with it, AT&T would. It would be nice if there was some kind of way the VOIP app checks the carrier and if it's on a carrier who doesn't want it it only allows it on WiFi.

Just be careful of your battery life decryption. I used to run Fring (then Nimbuzz) on the N95 I used to have, and it would suck the charge out of the battery in about 3-4 hours. Won't be a problem if you leave your iPhone in its dock at home, but leave it on the kitchen table and forget about it and you could be in a spot of bother
