Just on the news... Optus to Sell iPhone
Optus to sell iPhone in Australia: web
Optus to take on iPhone - According to CNET.
Quote:
Website CNET.com.au is reporting that an industry insider has confirmed that Optus will begin selling Apple's iPhone in the last week of June.
The announcement is expected to be confirmed ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference on June 9 in San Francisco where Apple CEO Steve Jobs is tipped to launch a 3G version of the iPhone.
The current version of the iPhone uses enhanced GSM, known as EDGE or 2.5G, to communicate with the mobile phone network.
Telstra is the only telecommunications company in Australia to support the EDGE network, raising speculation that they were the front runner.
The release of a 3G version of the iPhone opens the way for other carriers, such as Optus and Vodafone.
CNET.com.au also reports that Apple may begin selling unlocked iPhones through its Apple stores and resellers, and that US iPhone carrier AT&T is planning a $US200 ($A214.68) price drop on the next generation iPhone

How does this tie in with the "unlocked" theory that was around a couple of weeks ago?
I am glad Telstra don't have it!

Well I really want MacTalkers to start analysing the plans as soon as they appear to figure out who will be best to go with based upon your preferred usage. I wonder if details will leak sooner.

I've heard bad reports from family members about Optus service, is it better than Telstra?

Looks like the news is correct. The same claim about Optus getting selected was just reported on the SBS World News.

Well it does make sense - their prepaid plans are going to be more 'data friendly' in a few days.
Telcos are slow to innovate, and they'd only change if they'd have something to gain.

Dammit.
Looks like I'll be buying an unlocked iPhone then.
I'll never go with any other telco other than Telstra.

The article is pretty lame really in terms of being a news story. They give no background into how popular the iPhone has been overseas... They mentioned "unlocked" iPhones, but offered no explanation of what that means specifically to the iPhone...
Good new though in my opinion! I'm an Optus prepaid user... $30 buys me $120 of credit plus some free SMS per day and $30 or $40 freetime to 5 Optus numbers... Does me fine.... hope it'll be iPhone-able.

I'm on Tel$tra, and as my parents are too, I get free calls to them, and my siblings (dad linked his ABN number with the account).
IF my mum will let me move to Optus, I will be happy. If not Outright it is...

Here's what I think all the news and rumours indicate: The iPhone will be released in 3G Worldwide in June but there will still be carrier deals, the advantage will be a subsidised phone (explains the Optus deal and the $200 price drop in the US on AT&T) as well as full price phones available at the Apple store and at resellers. At the very least this latest rumor means there will be a 3G version (the iPhone will Bomb big time if it's only GPRS, BIG time) in June.
If it does come out on Optus I'll probably use my Tax return to pay off my current plan and get the iPhone, I have no problem changing carrier, none of them are really that bad (I'd even be fine moving to Telstra assuming there's a decent data rate), but I'd like to just be able to stay with my current carrier if I can (Vodafone).

i think $50+ prepaid only come with the free data. $50 comes with 100mb.
