I'm with you here:

- as you've said, car accessories (especially if they sort out the phone interference)
- headphone adaptors
- cases / screen protectors
- handsfrees

are all threads that have already popped up here recently.

i don't know if this has been brought up before, but...

would the iPhone be classified as a PDA with regards to salary sacrificing?

Hey Decryption,

How much data do you use with telstra on edge on a month average?

And what data cap are you on.. can you monitor your data usage and have you gone over?

Thanks

Just changed my Telstra data plan (i am on NextG) they gave me the following options (i was $8 for 3mg)

$5 / 5mb
$10 / 20 Mg
$29 / 80Mg
$59 200mg
$89 / 1Gb
$119 / 3Gb

I've jumped on the $29 for now.... but the $89 for 1gb is tempting

They are pretty expensive prices for so little data usage.

AFAIK this wont work. the sims for modems (on telstra, voda, optus, whoever) are usually locked down to only work in modems.

this is not a fault of the iPhone but a fault built into the data sims the phone companies sell.

Another satisfied iPhoner here. Thx Decryption and others who've provided input.

Not sure if these are worth adding/updating the OP:

(1) As per step 2 I quit iTunes when it launched. But during the ZiPhone process iTunes opened again with an error message. I didn't do anything and just waited until ZiPhone gave me that "all done" message. Then I quit iTunes and continued with the instructions. All worked fine.

(2) Installer now includes 2 BSD Subsystem apps. I used the one without the numbers in the name. Again all worked fine.

(3) Direct link to Virgin Data plans = Rates – Cheap rates on great value pre-paid & monthly plans

(4) Optus "Retention" Team for Small Business = 1300 556 385 ... if you want to threaten to leave Optus unless they get closer to the Virgin price ... a process I am presently undertaking! ... [edit] I had some success. They gave me a $5 data plan that matched Virgin. I'd threatened to pull 2 mobiles, cable internet, wireless internet and home phone. If you don't ask ...

(5) I had an Australian friend go to NY on holidays. He bought my phone in the 5th Avenue store. The Apple sales dude was happy to accept his Australian AMEX card. He also made no effort to discourage the sale ... "you'll need to hack it to get it to work in Australia". My friend brought back 2 iPhones both still in shrinkwrap, but he carried one and his wife carried the other - no Duty when entered Australia.

Again, thanks.

haha. nice work by your friend there.....

guys, just a quick question regarding maps. NOT satellite

are the street maps saved on to the phone? or are they constantly downloaded as you use them?
is there a way to save them to the iPhone if they are constantly downloaded?

just thinking, i am giving up a GPS system on my windows mobile phone at the moment, but having maps on tap is all i will use. (sometimes)

thanks

It should technically work, in regards to Vodafone, data sims that you are given when you sign up to the say 5gb data plan are no different physically than the ones you would get if you came in and signed up on a $49 cap. In some trouble shooting situations the data sim will be tried in a handset to ensure that it is connecting to the network, so they are certainly able to work in handsets.

They are both allocated a phone number and both will make calls and recieve/send txt.

I'm waiting for my iphone to arrive, then I can try my Voda 5gb sim in it and see if it works, not that I would use it alot, but a few people have asked the same question here and it would be good to get an answer.

I'll let you know when I get the chance to test it if you would like.

I always ask this of people unsure about using a credit card online...

Would you share your details over the phone (ie. Ticketek)? Would you provide the details on a form to be faxed or on paperwork filed on site in a store?

If so... trust me... your security is hundreds of times safer over the internet, since at least there's a way of tracking what computer made the purchase.

my understanding is that they are constantly downloaded from google servers, and that there is no way to pre download them

im backing there will be a tom tom or alike released under the new SDK... im sweating on it anyway :P

thats a shame
im guessing that the maps are stored in a cache? so if i access them over wifi..... and get as much as i need.... then it will be stored there for when i need it?

or is that wishful thinking?
