lots of helpful info there
i just recently got an iphone from overseas, charged it up, put my sim in it and could make and receive calls. but i cannot access any of the internet services, would that have something to do with my carrier ?or does it need activating? or anything else

You need to set your APN in settings > network > edge. Your APN depends on your network.

Yeah they will be able to tell you but Virgin's is 'VirginInternet' and Vodafones is 'vfinternet.au' without the quotes.
