iPhone SDK & Enterprise Features Announced!
Just opened up the AppleInsider coverage of the SDK event and started reading up from the bottom, where I see this:
Quote:
1:08: Customers want push email, global address lists, Cisco IPsec VPN, Certificates and identities, WPA2 with 802.1x, enforced security policies, and Device configuration.
1:10: Customers also want Remote wipe.
1:11: The iPhone is getting all these things in the next software update.
1:12: Microsoft Exchange support will come built into the iPhone's email app and work via ActiveSync directly with Exchange Server.
1:14: Exchange will also interface with the iPhone's Calendar and Contact apps. Exchange can be configured via the Mail app's configuration screen and will include on/off sliders for settings.
|
Isn't that pretty much game over?

The SDK is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to have a play with it.

Seriously! Guys this was never going to be a release of the phone in x y or z. Tim Cook pretty much nailed it, I think, when he said Asia will want a 3g iPhone. Australia will come under that banner, I'm sure.
By the way... the dev fund of $100m is rather impressive - google's android has a $10m fund.

Holy cow...
Q & A afterwards:
Q: Ryan from Engadget asked about SIM unlocking. Will that be not allowed?
A: *pause*
*dagger eyes*
Yeees.
Is that yes, not allowed, or yes, will be?!

Silly me thinking that a roadmap might actually include information about further rollouts or the one feature that even Woz thinks should have been in it from the start.

It's software - not hardware. And 3g has been gone over ad nauseam - it ate battery life far too much.
QFT:
Q: WiMax iPhone?
Steve: Were not here to talk about hardware today, only software.

On a different topic, huge focus on the Enterprise. Exchange support, sync Contacts/AB and Calendar/iCal sound great. IT Manager tools to assist migration is smart. Looks like Apple are stepping up their attack on Blackberry and Palm.

Yep... was a nice side step to the question:
Should RIM be worried?
Ask them!
I think Apple actually underestimated what people would want to do with this.
VOIP Apps allowed for WiFi but not for "cell network" - I bet that he is slightly regretting the 5 year deal with AT&T etc.

Anyone who was expecting hardware announcements must be drinking.
If they were to announce a 3G iPhone and not deliver for 2-3mths that would single handedly kill their current entire sales for those months... but by announcing software improvements which will become available to current owners if anything, stimulates current sales for those that never purchased one uncertain of future compatibility (eg Enterprise features)

Except that a 3g iphone will be leaked well before release probably like the first was from the FCC. So they either announce it early or it gets leaked early. If it's not the FCC then someone will notice them buying millions of 3G chipsets.
In a perfect world, spring it on people. In a world where people like leaking information, no chance.

Yep - it shall be awesome
Every person in upper management will have an iPhone now as it will just cream RIM, Windows and Palm smartphones and be way easier to support (going by my colleagues experience with Blackberry, it's a total pain in the arse).
I'm sitll digesting the SDK info, but from what I can tell, it looks pretty good. $99 one off fee for a developer and that's it. They can release their apps for free if they want, or charge whatever price they nominate. It will be interesting to see what Apple does and doesn't allow.

Doesn't this kind of mean that the iPhone can't be paired with a specific carrier anymore? Every business has a relationship with their Telco. Businesses aren't going to throw those relationships away to shift to a new Telco just because of the handset they offer. I see this as being the beginning of the iPhone as Telco independent device. Which by definition means that it will not be locked.
