Which carrier? Optus or Vodafone?
Hello,
I'm getting my iPhone in about a week from the U.S.
I have been looking at cap plans the last few days for Vodafone and Optus.
I am currently on Optus Pre-Paid.
There isn't a big difference between the caps on the two providers that I can see.
I wish to spend $60 a month.
Just wondering from the people who are already using the iPhone on Optus or VF which they believe is better for an iPhone user at seems to be more reliable?
I have seen the threads about call drop outs etc.
I'd like to use Mobile Internet on it a bit, but not an overly large amount, Vodafone charges $1 for 5 mins access regardless of what you download in that time, Optus have data that you purchase on top of your plan as extra 5mb etc..
I just want something that could handle instant messenger for the train sometimes,
or the mobile facebook.
I will have access to wireless networks at work and at home though so I am not terribly worried about having mobile internet for the night time for example considering its going to be very slow..
Any sharing opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Virgin (=Optus network, but cheaper data).
$45/mo cap + $5/mo data (for 50mb) should easily sort you out for slow GPRS net surfing and email. If you need more data then up it to $10/mo for 300mb (Edit: corrected, thanks Chuck).
I'm on the same plan. It's great.
I'd choose Optus over Vodafone right now as being charged by time is MUCH worse than being charged by data used, especially for light weight "always on" things like IM and email.

I agree with Marc on the Virgin Mobile $45 cap plus data option. Virgin $10 plan data is actually 300Mb/mth.

Forgot to mention, something else that is important to me, is the amount of credit you get for your money each month (obviously) but also the ability to check to see how much you have spent so far during the month. For example logging into their website to check how much of your cap you have used, this comes in handy especially since any unused money at the end of the month is wasted..

Optus and vodafone both have the ability to see your cap usage online. Vodafone data plans are a rip off as a single connection will cost you a dollar. Virgin like everyone is saying is your best choice. They are saying that an online cap usage meter will be available in the next few weeks. Currently you have to ring up to find out your cap usage.

iPhone has a built in data counter; if you get into the habit of resetting it on your billing anniversary you'll be fine.

I am looking into the Virgin Plan.
However, with the Optus plan, do I need the purchase the data on top even though its not using their Zoo 3G speeds? Or because its not 3g will it be charged some other kind of way? If I was to go with Optus I'd go on the $59 plan and then go on the Heavy data plan for an extra $15 for 20MB. I basically only want the mobile internet for instant messenger and mobile facebook, for anything else I'd use a wireless broadband network.

I think that's the closest URL to the plan.

So I enabled GPRS from Optus today. I was under the assumption that the iPhone retains edge network usage memory, but the counter seems to 'reset' after I turn my iPhone off.
I had downloaded about 1.5mb which showed up under usage settings, and then I rebooted my iPhone, but the counter had reset to 0.
I have bossprefs installed but I doubt that is causing it to play up.
Anyone have any ideas? It's a pretty big problem because how are we meant to monitor our usage and with Optus charging $30 for 100mb I definitely don't want to go over this.

Sure about that? Mine never resets unless I explicitly reset it.

why should it matter what carrier we use on the iphone, if you have a SIM card, then use it.
Ok GPRS would be handy for those that really need to get emails on the run etc.
But hey a phone bill is a phone bill no matter what phone gets it to you. Just choose a carrier that gives you service in your most frequented locations.
