Free iPhone Unlock Service - Support the EFA

Free iPhone Unlock Service - Support the EFA

A few people around here want iPhones but can't be bothered unlocking it and going through that whole rigamarole. So to kill two birds with one stone, I'll unlock your iPhone for free, as long as you make a donation to Electronic Frontiers Australia. The EFA are our men in the trenches, dealing with political and corporate bullshit on the Internet. From their website:

Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc. (EFA) is a non-profit national organisation representing Internet users concerned with on-line freedoms and rights. EFA was established in January 1994 and incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act (S.A.) in May 1994.

EFA is independent of government and commerce and is funded by membership subscriptions and donations from individuals and organisations with an altruistic interest in promoting online civil liberties.

Our major objectives are to protect and promote the civil liberties of users and operators of computer based communications systems such as the Internet, to advocate the amendment of laws and regulations in Australia and elsewhere (both current and proposed) which restrict free speech and to educate the community at large about the social, political, and civil liberties issues involved in the use of computer based communications systems.

EFA members and supporters come from all parts of Australia and from diverse backgrounds. They are people who recognise that preserving freedoms and rights always depends on the willingness of people to defend them and that combatting the threats posed by the anti-civil libertarian forces, the radical right agenda and ill-informed reports in the media requires constant vigilance and support.

Sounds like a good cause to me and an important one in this day and age, particularly with the new government's proposed mandatory ISP level filtering policy.

So, if you'd like to get an iPhone unlocked by me for free, this is all you have to do:

1. Get an iPhone. Any iPhone will do, they can all be unlocked.

2. Give me the iPhone. You'll need to be without it for 2-3 days while I get around to unlocking it. It should be the next day but it could be longer, depends how busy I get. I have a job and MacTalk to worry about too

You can either bring it over to my place or you can meet me in the CBD. Even mail it to me with a return envelope if you like. Just PM me with how you'd like to give me the iPhone and we'll work around that.

3. Donate to the EFA. Visit this site: EFA How to Make a Donation to EFA and give them whatever amount you want. Once you've done that send me a PDF of the transfer receipt to the EFA so I know you actually gave them something.

4. Sit back, relax while your iPhone is being prepped. Wait for me to contact you to tell you it's ready to pick up (3 days max really, should be the next day). We arrange how to get the iPhone back to you.

5. There is no step 5.

I'll also help if you've borked an iPhone upgrade or something has gone wrong with your iPhone. Just get your iPhone to me somehow and I'll try figure out what's up with it

Sounds good? Just send me a PM. Or email me: anthony.agius@mactalk.com.au or add me to iChat: aagius@mac.com or GTalk: aagius@gmail.com

YES. Turn it on and play with it before you give it to me. If it's a dud, send it back to it's maker

I'll just unlock working iPhones. If someone's borked it up, I'll try fix it, but I can't promise anything,

Did you get your frozen phone fixed or did you get a new one?

I ask because if you got it working, I'll send you one of mine to wield your magic on...

Nah, I got a new one. It had a hardware fault. You should send yours back too if it's the same issue.

Best way to get one is if you know someone in the USA who can ship it to you

It's not "free" but it's free. You don't pay me, you donate to the EFA, which is a more worthy cause than lining my own pockets by simply repeating instructions found easily on the net.
