How does push email work?

How does push email work? I am thinking of moving to a cheaper mobile plan which is not so generous with their data limits.

Disregarding the retrieval of the email itself, would i be saving more data and connection attempts using a push email service with yahoo than a regular pop/imap mail that attempts to check every 15/30/60 minutes?

EDIT: Sorry - misposted here :P

Though, I suppose it varies greatly depending on how much email you receive throughout the day?

yes... well at least I imagine so

here in Japan almost all phones have push email service, and basically it works the same way SMS does... the email arrives on the server... and the server kicks it to your phone... so the only time you are getting bits is when the email is being sent.
