Virgin Mobile BYO plan contract?
Hi. I've sent Virgin Mobile but haven't received a reply yet so I'm wondering if someone can help me get a simple answer. I'm getting an iPhone and have been looking at different plans. My only concern is signing up for a contract.
When going to Virgin Mobile's website it gives you can option for a BYO plan, but it indicates that its a 24 month plan. Is this correct or can you opt out of it anytime without incurring any additional cancellation fees?
For those that have been using virgin mobile with their iPhones, is 300mb enough? In hindsight, would you have gone with Vodafone's 5gb plan? Would appreciate any information. Thanks!

A friend has done just that with virgin mobile - post-paid byo without lock-in contract. Seems to be best plan for iphone at the moment. He has also said that data traffic is quite small, as in 300MB is good enough for normal use - since you will use wifi when at home.

Awesome. Exactly what I wanted to hear. Now I have to figure out how to transfer my 3 number over without canceling my contract.

you cant do it. three will want money to give you a new number on that existing contract, BUT when you get a new number you automatically forfit the original number. you could try telling them what you want to do but i doubt they would be very happy if you were going to another carrier.
mayby ask them if you can put your existing number onto prepaid and get a new number for the contract. when that is all sweet port the number from three prepaid to virgin. this might be a work around. i dont know the technicallities but it might work. wouldnt be surprised if it cost you about $80

I'm yet to hear of someone exiting a 3 contract without paying out the remainder of the term.

I'll still be with 3. Got about 20 months left on my contract I'll just stick in the 3 sim onto my nokia when I need to make international calls.
I'll probably have to go to a store to handle this one. I think my in laws have a spare prepaid SIM so I'll see if I can switch over the 2 numbers, then transfer my original number over to virgin. See how it goes. If not, guess I'll just have to notify everyone of my new number.

hi
i have been on virgin's BYO mobile plan for quite a while and for me it is the best value plan out there. Also, i think their data subscription service is by far the best value too.
I opted for the 300mb plan but somehow, they got me on the 50mb plan.
in my first month, i used about 75 mb... ie about 25 mb over the limit. I found out when my service was suspended for exceeding my credit limit!
I had never paid more than $45 per month before so i rang them (using home phone) and found out the good news!
Turns out, the excess charge is 1.5cents per kilobyte. At 25 mb over.... you do the math! biggest phone bill in my life!
got them to put me back on the correct 300mb plan and the excess charges went away.
300mb is heaps... at gprs speeds i usually fall asleep before my page opens...

Hmm, that's not good news. My other option is to go with Telstra prepaid. They have a $40 a month option and you get 80mb a month in that...

how anyone could use 5gb of data is simply beyond me. They'd have to glued to the iphone 24/7. even 1gb is pushing it.

If you jailbreak it, you can use the mobile as a modem...
