Erica's Listen App - Insanely Great!
Ok, so it is probably cooler than that - just wanted to use the SJ quote!
I read this the other day on TUAW and only got around to installing it this arvo after a mate asked me about it and WOW
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/07/make-...you-whats-pla/
Basically you start the app, hold the phone to any song that is playing and about 30 seconds later it will tell you the name, artist and album on screen!
It seriously looks like magic to me! I have been trying to trick it all arvo - it picks up Sigur Ros (random ambient Icelandic band) and even tells me when I am listening to a live version of the song! The only things it could not find were Indie artists and covers such as Rockstar Supernova performances! Very impressive.
I find it tolerable over GPRS. It works best also when sampling a part of the song with lyrics.
It is a Beta so be warned. Use at your own risk.I have had it crash about 3 times - including when a call came through while sampling (the gf was NOT happy that I 'hung up' on her!) but no issues after restart and apparently this issue can be fixed;

you can fix the white screen and crashing my setting the permissions of the application properly. you can do the whole cmod or chmod whatever it is in terminal, but i find it really easy to use fugu, then get info on the app, then change the permission (the last option "octal mode representation") to 0755 from 06something. respring after changing the settings or rest your iphone, whichever is easier for you.
|
Find it now under 'Multimedia' in Installer now!
By far the coolest iPhone app I have used - I am addicted! As someone who always wants to know what a song on the radio or an ad is, this is a godsend!

I have a similar app on my phone (SE W880i). I've only used it a couple of times and it's pretty good...

Apparently that is how it works - it mimics a SE and uses the same database. Pretty sneaky, hope it doesnt get shut down!
I am just amazed at how useful this is going to be for me, wanting to know the names of songs I hear every day

Well I always hear songs on ads, the radio, parties etc that I like but don't know the name of. Now I can look it up and grab a copy. I am just one of those people who knows if I like it as soon as I hear it.
Sigur Ros are awesome aren't they - such beautiful music! I actually made a bet with my mate that the app wouldnt have any idea about them...needless to say I lost
f1_power: Have you tried changing the permissions as per my post? Also are you on 1.1.2? Apparently 1.1.1 has some issues.

Just tried it on 10 songs - 8 of them it got, the other 2 were techno's, so understandable.
Pretty damn awesome.
God i love the iPhone...

Ok so it obviously isnt limited to songs in the phone, where does it get its music to match it too from? some type of database, where?

I'm using 1.1.2 and have made sure the permissions are 755 - but still stuck at "Finished Recording - Contacting info server"

That means it has no clue what song it is, try another song.

If this is the kind of recognition tech available to us ordinary mortals, or those with an iPhone in Oz at least, imagine what kind of voice/speech recognition the spook agencies have.

Does anyone know the name of the original Sony Ericsson software? I wouldn't mind trying it out on my phone.

I don't have an iPhone but I would buy one just for this one function. Like Andrew , I too find myself listening to the radio in the car etc when a song comes up and I think "Gee that's good , but what is it and who is singing it ?" This would be great. This is very clever technology.
And yes I agree tintin , ASIO , the CIA etc would have some form of super duper speech recognition software that probably makes this look tame.
