iphone bill... careful...
well, firstly, I have a vodaphone "red sim" with "no plan", and have been happily using this month to month for about 5 years. generally my bill is about $100 per month. fine. no prob.
ok, so here's the thing with my iphone... BE CAREFUL...
I simply typed in live.vodafone.com in a general settings box, and presto, I was web browsing just like on a computer. it was amazing to be on the train and see any website just the same as being on the computer. I went to smh.com.au and yahoo.com etc etc. I even had google earth doing its thing with maps and satellite images. well, that was about 1 hour of browsing...
I thought, how cool. anyways, I was curious to know how it was even working, and then found a setting called "usage" on the iphone. I see I had downloaded 12megs and uploaded about 2megs? during that 1 hr of browsing. fair enough.
I then called 1555, (vodafones balance check) on my iphone, and got a rude shock. that 1hr of browsing cost me $90 alone. for F...K's SAKE!!! arghhhh
anyway, long story short.
iphone users beware. it is so easy to just go web browsing, best check you got a "data plan" before you browse.
lesson learned. lucky i checked hey????
bugger
ps. hehe, hey scott, they stung me. geez.

yes, you are right. however, they also charge per megabyte. the point I am making is that the web browsing experience was just like on a computer, pages just rendered in their full glory. the speed was absolutely acceptable, amazing to be honest.
It was as if I was just browsing at home. like on a regular internet plan. thats the point again, its not. its a mobile. and it will be as hard to live without this mobile internet, as it is from a home internet setup.
whatever... i got a mobile data plan now. 29.99 for 100meg.
cheers

sorry if this sounds totally dumb, but can I just buy the Virgin data plan, and then in the iphone settings box type in the virgin data name, instead of the vodafone data name eg (live.vodafone.com) ???
I simply dont want to go thru the rigmaroll of changing providers if its not needed.
cheers

Sounds like a fair question - i'd like to know the answer too.
Is there anyway to set the iPhone so it won't download/access data unless you have a WIFI connection?

I dont have an explanation but you can't. You need to have a virgin sim card inserted for the virgin data to be up and running.
I guess the other thing you can do is insert a fake apn so it doesn't access the net without you knowing.

+1
Although I would like to be able to find out how much money I have spent on phone calls on the Virgin website, as it does not seem to come up. I am on the $20 cap plan...

Fair question, but I think you'd have to have a virgin sim AND be on a compatible virgin plan as the $5 (or $10) data is an extra for the plan I'm on.

I believe firmware 1.1.2 has the ability to turn off edge data (can anyone confirm?). I also think I've seen a 3rd party util to do it.
I don't see that as a huge deal... the phone won't download anything without you asking (unless you have mail set to autocheck).

Hah! $90. That's nothing.

I switched to virgin. It was dead easy to do, and I has seamless service throughout the process.

This happened to me as well, but I found out after about a week of usage.
Easily fixed by using a dummy APN.
I made a post about 3 months ago now telling people about my experience with GPRS data and Vodafone.

well, im so far behind with the iphone. ive had 1.0.2 for 3 months etc and tried the data thing when i first got it, but couldnt figure it out. all seemed too hard. was content with wi-fi. but just upgraded to 1.1.2 yesterday and typed in the vodafone APN and wow i was stolked when i was on the train and gave it a whirl.
anyhow, just read your blog entry. too bad about that $900 bill mate. i got $90 for 1 hour. thankful i checked. anyhow, will look into the options with virgin as you have done. as for the setting to switch off data, 1.1.2 i can confim has a setting to turn off "data roaming" although I am yet to test if it actually works. get back to you.
cheers
