iphone drowned :(

well on friday night i was eating thai and enjoying a fresh young coconut when my iphone somehow flipped out of my hand, bounced off my girlfriends knee and did a double somersault right into the coconut.

it was submerged for a few seconds before i tried to turn it off (not as easy as ripping the battery out on another phone). left it to dry out for a day or so and now it just does an endless booting cycle with the apple logo. damn.

anything i can do with it? anyone want coconut scented parts?

yeah the fact that it was a somewhat interesting end makes it a little more worthwhile. i was sitting around with a few mates and they were in histerics. it looked like the coconut had some massively strong magnet on it that just sucked the iphone in.

in other news i just hooked it back up to my computer and it synced ok. put my sim back in and it connects to the network and receives calls ok. it looks like the touchscreen is totally dead though...just doesn't respond to anything....any ideas?

Yay for sticky conductive fluids. Not much you can do short of sending it back (provided it wasn't unlocked, o'course).

I have to say it, though ...

Plan on framing the old one??

Few mini coconuts in every corner would look good.

Lol @ SyncMan, very nice!

If it's seriously buggered, you could always send it to me. I'll give it a good home next to my seriously buggered Quadra 840av, my alive but useless IIGS, and alive but non communicative TAM.

You might also want to try contact cleaner or something on the internals

If it's dead/bricked - I know that chrissara (who donated the server running this site to us) has a working one with a broken screen. I'm sure he'd love access to a spare part - as would many others.

Too bad about the drowning though.

I used to do a lot of diving & underwater photography and the usual trick if you flooded a camera (and I have never had to do this but have seen it done) is as quickly as possible turn it off, flood the camera/device with something like metho which displaces the water and evaporates quickly off the circuits. Let it dry out, cross your fingers and see what happens. No guarantees!!!

^^ I've heard stories of audio guys doing that with gear after outdoor gigs get flooded.

The endless reboots happen when something important isn't working at boot, like when you've buggered or unplugged the modem card.

You can fix it, parts are expensive though. could be just the mainboard or the baseband.

Have a look on ifixit.com for parts prices, if you're happy to have it fixed and are in the sydney area I can help you.

My boss dropped his iPhone into a pond and the whole thing refused to operate. he pulled it apart and literally dipped it in alcohol (thinking that it couldn't get any worse), then let it dry, and everything now works perfectly again except for the speaker (headphones are still OK).
