If i bought an iphone now from the states

If i bought an iphone now from the states, it would probably have 1.1.2 firmware.

What are my options with that? Is there an unlock available atm?

All i want it for is the contacts, mail, and the phone. Voicemail and youtube aren't important at all.

Thnx.

Nathan.

Nathan it's not worth you buying an iPhone from the US untill the new bootloader is cracked.

You only have a short wait now for the iPhone to be released here, you would be better off taking that option.

I've been reading an article today regarding the iPhone Dev Teams work on a full sim unlock on 1.1.2 - they have one - but it's currently not reliable, they won't release until they are sure it's got a much better hit rate. To that end they are going to go opensource instead of closed.

I tried unlocking a friend's iPhone (was bought about a week ago in NY).

I successfully downgraded to 1.1.1 and got everything working really easily. Then I hit a brick wall when trying to get it to play nice with an Aus SIM card.

I think the bootloader BOOT04.06_M3S2 hasn't been hacked yet. Or something. I'm no iPhone expert.

So he'll have to wait. Shouldn't take long until someone sorts something out though. I'd say you'll be in the same boat.

You think so?

I'd almost put money on us not having the iPhone here for another 6 months. That's a LONG time with no iPhone love!

I give it a week before the new bootloaded is cracked.

That's fair enough. There's definitely a risk that it won't ever work.

There's also a slim risk that permanent damage might occur when trying to hack it, although I've never heard of that ever happening.

So I agree that the whole iPhone thing in Aus isn't for people who don't want to take risks

Btw, I may have Mod next to my name, but I've never really done any Mod-stuff (well, only deleting spam occasionally), nor do I intend to... and I think the admins and mods should be just as accountable as everyone else, so feel free to have a go at me whenever I'm out of line

There've been enough headaches with the software updates to put me off getting a hacked 'Phone (which is exactly Apple's intent). I've decided to hold out for the official Oz release - who knows, it could be the 2G iPhone by then, with 3G and 16GB capacity. And if I need a Multi-Touch fix in the meantime, there's always the iPod touch ...

marc I am not having a go at ya m8. Just so many folks about here that have bought iPhones because they are cool. But have no idea what a hacked device is. Even with the very simple no brain directions placed on MacTalk. These same folks stuff the whole iPhone up. Then someone has to take time to sort them out. After doing this for the umpteenth time it begins to send one a bit shitty.

I think you will find the iPhone avail in Australia sooner than you might think. And wouldnt it be nice if these same non technical folks can buy a device & just use it.

One reason why there is very little comments from the iPhone Dev team now days. Is the constant repetaive posts asking the smae question or demanding a fix for something. These guys are doing this work in ther spair time. They are wanting to stop the rate of these its cool to have iPhone folks that have no clue what a hacked device is.

There is of course the other solution to even the latest iPhone firmware... turbosim. It's been discussed on these forums and there are guides to how to do it linked from ones posted here.

That system works with any iPhone. It is not cheap, and it's a pain to do from what I saw.

Lutze if these folks cant follow the simple MacTalk guides using anySIM & jailbreak. They are not going to handle TurboSIM. Also have you tried getting hold of one ? You might have a better chance winning lotto.

Aye W9cae, I'd agree 100% with you. But - the question was asked about what options are available.

It's not a full answer if you don't give them, no matter how much of a complete pain in the bottom it is to do the TurboSim way... the other side of this is also - it's only difficult if you don't know the answer.

Some folks might actually find the hardware fix really easy compared to the software one! oO

What he said. Sensible advice.

Purchasing an iphone at this stage is a fools errand as far as I am concerned. Wait for the official release and purchase an iphone that, like all Macs, "Just Works", not to mention the added comfort of having the Applecare in the event of problems.

six months is not a long time to wait.
