I think I'll have a look at a FM modulator

then plug straight into the headphone jack, seems like there are a few problems with the phone effecting the fm transmitters.

OK, I've been looking for the same thing for an iPod Touch. There's only two FM transmitters that I've found that I would buy. The DLO Tunestik looks most promising for the iPhone because it includes a remote to give you some tactile controls.
The other option, if it works is the Harmen Kardon Drive+Play, though it's a pretty hefty investment.

Yeah, it doesn't specify the type of quality though! It probably means CRAP QUALITY 100% GUARANTEED
In the same vein as the OP I am still looking for a slim 3.5mm adapter for my sexy Etymotics to fit my iPhone. I went into a couple of dick smiths last night looking for a non-existant 1G shuffle case that was supposed to come with a compatable adapter but nothing. One of the sales assistants at the DSE Powerhouse looked like he was about to mug me when he saw my iPhone

Actually a colleague of mine asked me if I needed an FM transmitter for my car because we need one for an xmas boat trip on Monday to link his iPod into the boat's stereo.
I was tempted but the previous FM transmitters I've had have been shite, no really. Since anything would beat my crappy factory stereo in the Hyundai I think I might as well get an entry level Pioneer or something from JB with an aux in. That would beat the FM transmitter hands down...and Mark will just have to borrow one from somewhere else

I have a Kensington FM transmitter and it works quite well with my iPhone - at least as well as with my video iPod.

It said on the box it would work with the iPod Touch... so It could work.

The iPhone doesn't work with my factory VW iPod kit on my Mk5 GTI...
The other thing to be aware of with FM transmitters is the GSM 'tick-tick-tick' interference that you get from the iPhone...could be a problem.
