How much did you get your iPhone for? (And where? and WHEN?)
Hey guys, I stumbled across this forum while researching on iPhones (by far the most active and helpful forum out). I just wanted to know how much you guys picked up your iPhones for, of course if it isn't against the rules, and where did you buy it from (eBay, Site, Friend, Etc..)?
EDIT: Date of purchase would also be good to know if ya's don't mind.
And more specifically, I'm aiming this question more towards the people who bought theirs in the U.S, straight off the apple/AT&T stores. Cause hopefully, my cousin will able to get me one over there, but he tells me that for you to get it at the price of USD$399 (excluding tax i think?), you MUST go on the two year plan with AT&T. Please correct me if I'm wrong guys, and if this is the case, what is the maximum price that I am looking at, maximum price as in EVERYTHING (tax, shipping costs, etc.)
Oh, the version of the iPhone (unlockable or lockable) doesn't concern me much, cause having an iPhone without the phone is satisfying enough (Until there's an unlock for it hopefully).
Thanks guys! Oh, and great forum by the way~ (And yes, I have been using the search function before posting, and I want to know the exact details/views) Thanks again!

Walking in the door at a US Apple store, you should pay just the list price ($US399) for any iPhone.... plus any applicable sales tax, ie if it's in California. Now no cash sales now I believe tho.....
The ITT Account thing only begins when you get the thing out of the box and start the activation process..... ie not applicable here in Oz.
But if you get the thing back here, you'll want to activate the phone function pretty damned quick, as it's relatively easy. Or at least it was month ago when I got mine (approx $US490 plus postage from Mac-Pro).
Great phone...

I got mine via a friend in the USA for the $399 price point. When you buy it, you buy the phone only - no plan. When you hook it up to iTunes, that's when you need an AT&T plan to be able to use your iPhone... if you want to do it Apple's way.
If it's a 1.1.1 (unlikely) you're sweet. Just head to jailbreakme.com and it'll do the rest for you.
If it's a 1.1.2, then it's a bit more complex, but still unlockable i think?
Keep in mind: Apple stores in the USA will only accept credit card payments with photo id for iPhones. You can only buy 2 at a time. You can not buy an iPhone if: - You pay with cash or a voucher/gift card
- You pay with any credit card that isn't USA
If i were in your position, I'd try an Apple store and see if you can get away with it like Febs did - or just pop into an AT&T store and try buying with cash.
Depending on the state in which your cousin buys it, you will have to pay state tax on the iPhone. In California (where my friend bought mine for me) this was about $80 on top.
If you are sending them via mail - do not send two together in the same package. This will put the package's worth over $1000AUD, so it'll attract an import tax from our customs service.

Just got mine from eBay for £327, but it's 1.1.1 and already unlocked.

If you are willing to have an iPhone without the phone you could always buy an iPod touch ;P.

True, but it's nice to know the fact that even if it is currently unlockable (the 1.1.2 with most recent bootloader I believe?), there is a chance of it being unlocked. And I would never get an iPod, never been a fan (too mainstream). I know, ironic ey? lol
Anyway, thanks for the reply guys. And I should of put another question the "When?" part. Since there has been a price drop, and also, inflation prices, on eBay for instance, it's semi-important to know the date of purchase.
Fingers crossed, if I do get my cousin to purchase one for me (he is in California btw), it will probably be between late Dec to early Jan.

$433USD = $501AUD after CC conversion fees, purchased on Sunday from the Apple Store in Buffalo, NY. Taxes are a little higher in NY than some other states, but I didn't mind.
It was a v1.1.1 week 41.
Cheers,
- Febs.
