iPhone bill. How much was yours?

Hi Chaps.

I've just copped a bill for almost $1000 on my iPhone. (Usually, my phone bills are in the vicinity of $100) I did a full write up on what who when where how on my blog, so i'll save you the story... But yeah:

Has anyone else found accidental data usage to cost them way too much money?

Matt

My optus bill usually ends up being $120 a month, $79 for call and sms cap, $29 for the 100Mb Data plan and the rest is the insurance on the phone I got with the plan last year and other charges.

:edit:

Oh, and install services.app Like i said, switch off edge when you don't need it.

I am with Vodaphone now I have my iPhone and it was $120 on the $99 cap. I am on Wifi most places I go and my GPRS settings are vfinternet with guest as user and pass and when I want to use it I just put .au on the end of the GPRS address and get on the net.

That's very similar to what I was doing, bassman. I had it disabled in the settings most of the time.... :/

I would question that bill. Its seems excessive.

I am on teltra pre paid, i take the $29 80meg data option and i like you have wireless int he places i spend most of my time. But with the 80meg option i still have plenty of data left over at the end of the month. I do use edge, my email check every 15mins so it will be doing that when i am not in a wifi zone. And i have been known to use google maps when out and about.

Vodafone are a total rip off with data, and people complain about telstra! but i reckon they were charging you for a full minute session every time your phone connected to ask something.

Speak to them and try to get a detailed summary of what was being communicated throughout your billing period, they must supply this.

My Telstra bill is $100 on average with my iPhone. I have the $10 data pack and rarely use my monthly amount as I always seem to find free WiFi. I have my phone set to manually check mail as this seems to be where iPhone can soak up the data by checking every 5 min or so.

I should add my Telstra bill also includes my Broadband & home line.

My bill is supposed to be a $30 cap on Virgin ($20 for $50 of calls and $10 for the data plan) but my first bill hit $80....I didnt realise how expensive Virgins phone calls are! 70c for a 10sec call!

Luckily I haven't had any data issues like you Disko as I have the 300mb plan, it is a good plan, smart move taking it up. On the theory of the SMH website. I found that one day I left Safari on the BOM Radar Loop webpage which kept running even after I pressed home and locked the phone...battery got chewed up pretty quickly by the time I realised 8 hours later or so...

My old man got a bill like that when he got his N95, he rang up and questioned it. Turned out the guy in the store had put him on the wrong plan (for the needs he stated) so they charged him the rate the would have paid if he'd been on the right plan.

That said, the personal bundle that my dad's phone is part of included, 5 mobile phones, 2 ADSL plans and two home phone plans with a line rental each. That does not include the business bundle he also has.

Well, I just got off the phone with Vodfone, after speaking with an english speaking human for the first time.

I managed to cancel my account with no information other than my name and phone number. (So if you've got any friends on Vodafone, try phoning up and cancelling their service as a prank )

The Vodafone guy couldn't even tell me how much I owe them, because my number is now with Virgin - so i'll have to wait for the final bill to arrive in the mail.

Ouch Disko!

So just to confirm (as I'm overseas atm and will be for the next 3 weeks, so a similar mistake could be extremely expensive for me)...

If I don't have any EDGE settings (ie: APN, username or password), and I have "Data Roaming" turned off, AND I make sure that when I access things like Google Maps/Weather/Stocks, it can't connect...

...then I should be fine, and I won't be using any data?

Heard a few similar stories to yours Disko, so I'm just trying to make absolutely sure I won't end up with a huge bill.

To be honest I don't think I'll ever use EDGE/GPRS data until a reasonably-priced, unlimited (or close) data plan is released. I'll stick to WiFi until then.

Cheers,
- Febs.
