Brainstorm: The comprehensive iPhone guide - your input needed

Hi Guys, as promised I am working on a major clean up of the iPhone forum. I plan to do this by first creating a starting point sticky (which will also become an article). This thread will hopefully have a graphical flow chart on it, which all iPhone users can find where they are at and then click on the required step and be taken to another sticky on that issue. So far the stickies I have planned are;

iPhone buying FAQ -> Everything about buying
iPhone Hacking Help -> Troubleshooting all aspects (I can do this)
Unlocking 1.0.2 (guide already dont and posted as an article)
Upgrading 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 -> If you have an unlocked 1.0.2 and want an unlocked 1.1.1
Unlocking 1.1.1 -> if you have an OTB 1.1.1 iPhone
Upgrading 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 -> If you have an unlocked 1.1.1 iPhone and want an unlocked 1.1.2 iPhone

The will hopefully cover most aspects of the iPhone. I do, however, need help with these. We have some excellent, excellent users on this forum who know this stuff a lot better than I do and it would be great if you guys could write a brief and easy guide on each of the topics above and PM them to me. A good guide to the style of these would be like the recent upgrading to 1.1.2 in babysteps thread.

At this stage I am thinking I will lock these threads so as to no confuse people simply looking for a guide...all problems will be instead directed to a comprehensive iPhone hacking troubleshooting forum where you can post your problem and hopefully get help. This forum will be carefully moderated however to make sure it remains easy to follow and helpful.

All guides will be written using tried and tested methods so there will be no need to ask if it works etc. and if a better or new method presents itself you can simply PM me and I will update the locked sticky thread.

Is there any objections to this idea?

Also, any objections if I unstuck (to clean up and make info easier to find);

Hardware Unlock? (this is outdated now and risky)
Software SIM Unlock? (most of this is old and will be all covered in the new guides)
iPhone with 3? (this will be covered in the buying FAQ)
How to procure an iPhone? (again mostly outdated and will be covered in the buying FAQ)

Thanks guys...please post up thoughts and input...let's turn this into a brainstorm thread

I'm not (yet) an iPhone owner, but I thought that an iPhone bought now would have 1.1.2 on it? So is there a guide to unlocking 1.1.2? Or do you need to downgrade to 1.1.1 to unlock it? Should this be part of your starting point / flow chart?

Some of the stuff in Linux_insidev2's thread needs to be updated for 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 (e.g changing the carrier logo, number formatting etc.) Maybe a separate customisation thread?

I'm more looking for something like this so I can use an actual carrier logo rather than text. But I'll take a look - what's Erica's app called? Is it available on Installer or do I need to go seek it out?

Thanks guys. I might start a new customisation thread as well.

So no objections to unsticking the threads I mentioned?

I will probably start throwing it together tonight, so please excuse the mess

Thanks Huy for your PM as well, that looks good There have been a lot of good guides written on this site which I will need to dig up and post as concise stickies.

I am looking for some help with someone to write a buying guide, covering things like;

-approximate price
-buying options
-what it will have and wont have
-pros and cons of buying before release here
-and just answer basic questions about the phone, similar to that thread we had a few days ago (with all the comments that got deleted)

Cheers

It's linked off the post on TUAW about the iPhone/iPod Touch hidden preferences in Springboard. I downloaded it and sftp'd it onto the iPod...I didn't see it in Installer, but it should show up there soon.

Edit: And personally I'm contemplating picking up an iPhone which will probably be on 1.1.2, so what I'm most interested in is the downgrade from 1.1.2 to 1.1.1 for unlocking purposes.

Edit 2: The TUAW post and the download page for Erica's app.

Great Idea Andrew, will save endless scrolling through posts to find what's new of what I specifically would like help with.
Maybe a series of "How To..." threads?
there's an assumption that people know what's happening with their phones - I for one am a total nivice, and whilst I know Macs the iPhon is new and a little confusing at times
It would be especially great if the "how tos..." were very very simple, rather than assuming knowledge
Great Idea!

I'ld like to give something back to this site that has given me so much in the past few months so anything I can do I'm happy to help out.

Andrew, what about a wiki? Can we install one as part of the mactalk site and have an Australian iPhone section rather than relying on sticky threads? the nice thing is that as new information comes out readers dont then have to read through the entire thread to get the full picture. When doing something like Jailbreaking an iPhone Ive taken it as a task to read at least the first 3-4 pages and the last 2-3 pages of a thread (if it gets that big!) to make sure there's no extra warnings that weren't included in the OP's post and take on board any extra pearls of wisdom (I gotta say - Thanks Huy for lots of those!!!)

Steve

I will help out as much as I can, since I have done these things personally:

1. Buying (eBay)
2. Hacking (editing plists, etc)
3. Unlocking 1.0.2 (Unlock.app)
4. Unlocking 1.1.1 (anySIM 1.1), NOT using AppSnapp/jailbreakme.com however I'm sure I know how this works.
5. Unlocking 1.1.2 (anySIM 1.2.1u)

I'm on uni break so I can lend a hand when I'm free.
