NextG is Hsdpa but remember that 3G according to telstra is 850MHZ and to everyone else 3G is
Base transmit (BTx) 2110 - 2170 MHz
Mobile transmit (MTx) 1920 - 1980 MHz
BTx / MTx In TDD (Time Division Duplex) 1900 - 1920 MHz
So that means to get a nextG iphone it needs to be Designed for Australia
I dont really like the chances of that one

Methinks they won't be able to give them away once the official supported version is available here.
And Yes, in my opinion your better off just getting a cheap pre paid phone for now, and go the iphone once they are released by..............(insert preffered carrier here)

I agree watters. Approximately 2 billion people use GSM in over 200 countries. GSM makes up approx 80% of the global market for mobile phones as well. (Source: Wiki)

AT&T are rolling out an 850 network like Telstra have already done.
Australia will get the current iPhone first... then at a later date (when the American's get it) a 3G version.
My money is still on Telstra for the current iPhone - Feb / Mar 08.
Then late next year Apple will announce but not release the 3G iPhone.

Sucks that telstra are going to end up getting it, lets just hope steve jobs' negotiation techniques will make telstra give us a good deal!

Looking for somwhere to ask this question - and this topic seems to be about right.
I notice that the iPhone has an Alarm fuction as part of the clock. Question is - does it use a speaker - and is it loud enough to wake you?
Currently use my P910 as an alarm clock each day, if the iPhone can't wake me then it may not be for me - odd eh?

Yes it uses the same output as a ringtone playing (in fact, by default it plays the ringtone), via the external speaker.
I have used it and it is loud enough to wake me up.

You can add multiple alarms... yes, just like adding multiple world clocks.
But I have not tried setting multiple alarms, all ON at the same time (but I'm sure this will work too... like 5 min intervals or whatever).

I use the iPhone as an alarm clock
One of the sound effects 'Alarm' sounds like an air raid siren, you basically jump out of bed when that comes on - I've chosen like the most sedate sounding one and it still wakes me up and I sleep heavily

2G GSM is gonna be around for a looooooong time to come yet. There's a lot of infrastructure built on GSM besides mobiles eg telemetry devices to just write it off like Telstra did with CDMA.

NextG is running on the 850mhz whatever same as AT&T and therefore the best for the iPhone from what i've been reading.
