Here's a search of all the MacTalk Forum threads containing the word iPhone - might be a good start to spend an hour reading through here eh.. the same sort of questions have been asked and answered by others, so it might be a good start for you.

my tip is now wait.
I am still hoping for a Feb / Mar 08 domestic release with Telstra.
Saves all the hacks / hiccups / dramas and problems.
They are opening up the interface in Feb 08 already remember - so now for the sake of hopefully a few months you get a legit one!

If you've more money than brains, feel free to buy one.
Actually - that's pretty harsh. I take it back.
If you've lots of cash burning a hole in your pocket and great desire that cannot be sated... sure, buy one.
You're looking at around $700-$900 on eBay... which is of course around 100% markup on the US selling price. If you know someone in the US who is willing to be your proxy (and hasn't already bought an iPhone, as Apple now applies limits to purchases), then you could save some money.
If you really do have that much money... could you buy me one too? I don't even have enough for an iPod shuff.

I bought one via a friend in the US which did save me money, but I won't be able to use it as a phone until the new bootloader is hacked. I think they are only about 25% of the way there.
He won't be back with my iPhone for 3 weeks, so fingers crossed they have it hacked by then.
In hindsight I should have just bought one from voitech.com.au like 2 mates did. They already have their fully operational iPhones.

I got mine for $770 AUD from hamgo - but they have since ran out of stock. I have a colleague who is still waiting for his - and he ordered his iphone a week after me!
The main disadvantage of getting an unlocked iphone is that you wont have apple warranty or support.
I justified my unlocked iphone purchase for the following reasons:
1 - $770 isn't really a lot of money for a mobile. it isn't. sure you can get prepaid phones for $69 but its a whole different category altogether.
2 - i didn't want to be stuck on a contract. and if you compare REAL unlocked iphones selling for 999 euros, $770 AUD despite its shortcomings sounds like a reasonable bargain.
I can't commit to a 24 contract. I'm going traveling and i might be staying overseas for awhile. Even if you are planning short stays overseas you would like a phone that gives the flexibility to use different sim cards as global roaming will cost heaps.

I've had mine for 6 weeks now via a friend who went to the US. Cost $480. Got the hack working with minimal hassles. That's the 1.1.1 firmware. All good.
Another friend is bringing back another soon. My understanding was that the GUI hack for 1.1.2 was ready

I concur. I figure, we've waited this long, what's a few more months? I was considering an officially unlocked iPhone from France and Germany - till I saw the price.
You can always get an iPod touch in the meantime for your Multi-Touch fix.

Yeah, 1.1.2 is not unlockable yet, just jailbreak + activation
